BoE says it may tighten bank capital rules after Brexit relief
By Huw Jones LONDON (Reuters) - Banks in Britain may face stricter capital requirements to counter relief given to banks in the immediate aftermath of the June vote to leave the European Union, a top Bank of England official said on Thursday. The BoE said just after the vote, which sparked a sharp fall in sterling, it would allow banks to exclude central bank reserves from calculations of their broad measure of capital known as the leverage ratio. Households face inflation shock next year: BoE forecasts
The Bank of England has warned that households face a sharp upturn in inflation over the next few months after tearing up its economic forecasts. The new outlook for inflation - as well as an upgrade for the wider economy - means the Bank has dropped the suggestion that it could cut interest rates to near-zero to stimulate growth. In August, forecasts unveiled by governor Mark Carney suggested a much gloomier picture for gross domestic product (GDP) in the wake of the Brexit vote. -
