• BESA welcomes new stream of funding for apprenticeship levy

    The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has welcomed an unexpected improvement to the Apprenticeship Levy announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
    Speaking at this week’s Conservative Party Conference, Philip Hammond announced a £125 million funding package that will allow large employers to transfer up to 25 per cent of their Levy funds to smaller supply chain partners from next April. This is a significant step up from the 10 per cent, which started this July.

  • ONS figures show continuation of ‘Productivity Puzzle’

    The latest findings on the UK’s productivity released today by the ONS has revealed that productivity growth still lags pre-2008 levels, a decade on from the financial crisis. According to the figures, UK labour productivity in Quarter 2 (Apr to June) 2018, as measured by output per hour, grew by 1.4 per cent compared with the same quarter a year ago; this continues to perform below the pre-downturn average of two per cent continuing the ‘productivity puzzle’.

    Balfour Beatty has won a £10 million Early Works Contract for the Midlands Metropolitan Hospital, on behalf of Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.
