    My aunt Vera Ivers, who has died aged 89, was a social worker in Staffordshire who specialised in mental health and gerontology. For many years she worked for the Beth Johnson Foundation, a charity in Stoke-on-Trent, where she set up a network of advocates for elderly people as well as a telephone support line. One of her proudest achievements was the establishment, in 1989, of a cafe in the Hanley area of the city that served as a meeting point and information centre for older people.Vera was b
