  • Poppy wall unveiling by 107 year old Wiltshire resident

    Avonbourne Care Centre in Wiltshire, operated by The Orders of St John Care Trust, hosted the unveiling of a poppy wall on its premises on the 9th of November after a 2-minute silence. The unveiling ribbon was cut by 107-year-old resident, Phyllis Hayley, who has lived through two world wars. She said: “We must never forget.”

  • Kirkcaldy nursing home residents recreate Remembrance Day memorial

    This beautiful poppy display was created by the residents and activities team of Methven House Nursing Home in Kirkcaldy. Made from recycled plastic bottles, an idea that was picked up from Facebook, the display copies the Tower of London art installation which was created to mark the centenary of World War 1.

    Molly Allen was waiting for a bus when she decided to “pop in” to the recruitment office of the Army. After answering a few questions, she left and went home. A few days later her call up papers arrived!  Molly was only 17 when she joined the Army in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), slightly under age, but she “lied” about her age. She had always wanted to join the Army as her brother was already serving.

  • Ripon care home residents mark WW1 centenary

    RIPON care home residents have been creating poppy displays to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.
     
    Residents at Sycamore Hall Care Home, on Kearsley Road, have also taken a trip to Ripon Cathedral to see The Remembrance Day exhibits.
     
    The activities brought back memories for many of the residents, who had relatives and friends who fought and died in the war.

    Residents of Meadow House nursing home in Swaffham, Norfolk have contributed to a local restaurant’s poppy collection for a community remembrance display.
     
    This weekend marks the centenary of the end of the First World War, and remembrance services and poppy displays are taking place all over the country. In Swaffham, the owner of the Market Cross Restaurant, Kay Wells, has turned the frontage of the building into a wall of poppies, which have been donated from the community.
