• Brain recovery: Activity, not rest, may speed recovery after brain injury

    When recovering from a brain injury, getting back in the swing of things may be more effective than a prolonged period of rest, according to a new study in mice. These findings offer a compelling example of the brain's remarkable capacity to adapt in response to trauma. They also point to new, activity-centered treatment strategies that could one day result in faster and more complete recovery times for patients looking to regain mobility after a brain damage or a stroke.

  • New report suggests that dementia is set to be the biggest killer of men by 2020

    A new report, Health Profile for England, published by Public Health England (PHE) has revealed that the death rate* for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease may overtake heart disease in men as early as 2020 – it is already the leading cause of death in women.The Health Profile for England report details health and protection issues such as life expectancy, major causes of death and mortality trends and the data gathered will be used to shape the upcoming NHS long term plan.

  • Young citizens bring games and treats to Witney care home

    Residents at Cedar Court care home in Witney have enjoyed an afternoon of tea, cake and games thanks to local young people.
    A group of twelve young people from the local area visited Cedar Court as part of their work under the National Citizen Service (NCS) award.
    On Monday 13th August , the group visited the home, which provides residential services for older people, many of whom live with dementia.  They brought homemade cakes to share with the residents and played traditional board games

    Sunrise of Purley were delighted with the news that they have been awarded Platinum status with Excellence for End of Life Care, following a re-accreditation.   • Spruced up gardens look blooming lovely in care home competition

    Residents and care home staff across Hull, East Riding and Lincolnshire have been hard at work adding a splash of colour to their gardens for an annual competition.
    Each year over the summer months, Hica Group care homes go head to head to showcase the gardening skills of staff and residents.
    Fourteen care homes participated in this year’s competition and now after rigorous judging, four finalists have been chosen.
