A Viral Video Puts Spotlight On Tiny Community Dance Company In Lagos, Nigeria
“In the beginning, people kept saying, ‘What are they doing?!’” Mr. Ajala said. “I had to convince them that ballet wasn’t a bad or indecent dance, but actually something that requires a lot of discipline that would have positive effects on the lives of their children outside the classroom. I always say, it’s not only about the dance itself — it’s about the value of dance education.” – The New York Times -
Newspaper Newsrooms Are Shutting Down Across America. What That Means For News
Like office workers across the United States, journalists have been pushed by the coronavirus to retreat from communal spaces and into remote work. Now some are confronting the very real possibility that they may never again work in a physical newsroom — a touchstone of journalism — and what that could mean for the future of their profession. – Washington Post -
What We Learn From Book Manuscripts
The manuscripts of literary works-in-progress fascinate on many levels, from the flush-faced thrill of spying on something intensely private and the visceral delight of knowing that a legendary author’s hand rested on the paper before you, to the light that such early drafts shed on authorial methodology and intent. Sometimes, the very essence of what a writer is trying to express seems to hover tantalisingly in the gap between a word deleted and another added in its place. – BBC -

Cameron Mackintosh Companies Eliminate 850 Theatre Jobs
Theatre union: “The entire industry has been shocked by Cameron Mackintosh’s unwillingness to use the coronavirus job retention scheme in full or deploy resources beyond the furlough months to support his backstage and front of house staff. Other West End employers have done their utmost to find creative ways to safeguard the livelihoods of their staff and pursue the bigger mission of saving the world class skills and talents critical to the success of theatres up and down the count -
Why Efficiency Can Be Too Much Of A Good Thing
Some motivation produces excellent performance; too much motivation produces choking. Some group collaboration produces cohesion and enhances productivity; too much of it leads to staleness. Some empathy enables you to understand what another person is going through; too much could prevent you from saying and doing hard things. – Psyche -
The Evolution Of The Quizbowl, From Radio To Screen To Zoom
“Technology and trivia may not be obvious bedfellows. But trivia enthusiasts in the postwar-trivia boom of the 1950s would surely look in envy at technologies we take for granted today: word processors, search engines, wikis, videoconferencing services. In today’s Tedium, I take you through the technological evolution of a trivia format called quizbowl.” – Tedium -

Boogie-man Helfer bounces back from covid-depression
“People have been saying to me, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry you had to go through that!’ Well I’m not sorry — I think it’s the best thing that could have happened to me, considering where I am now. I feel reborn. Everything seems fresh to me. Now, how are things with you?” – Howard Mandel -
Last Of The Grand Unifying Theorizers
Rene Girard was almost the Platonic ideal of a hedgehog: he belongs to that lineage of 19th- and 20th-century thinkers whose vast synthetic ambition is now seen by many in the academy as not simply wrongheaded but almost impolite. Sweeping intellectual projects such as his come across today as naïve and even oppressive, animated by the most obnoxious nostalgias for the Enlightenment. – Los Angeles Review of Books -
Lorenzo Wilson Milam, The Johnny Appleseed Of Independent Community Radio, Dead At 86
He didn’t start the community radio movement (that was Lew Hill of Pacifica), but, as one radio historian wrote, “if Lew Hill fathered the movement, Lorenzo Milam reared it.” He founded independent, community-supported stations in Seattle (KRAB-FM), St. Louis, San Francisco, Portland, Dallas, and other cities, and he even wrote a guide to starting up a station, titling it Sex and Broadcasting. A polio survivor, he spent later life as a writer (The Cripple Liberation Front Marc -

Engraved stones found on Jersey 'an art form of 15,000 years ago'
Discovery of marked plaquettes at Les Varines points to earliest evidence of human art in British IslesThey are small, flat and covered in what appear to be chaotic scratches, but 10 engraved stone fragments unearthed on Jersey, researchers say, could be the earliest evidence of human art in the British Isles. The stones were found at Les Varines, on the island, between 2014 and 2018, and are believed to have been made by a group of hunters about 15,000 years ago. Eastern Europe: Tension Between Trying To Forget Communist Past And Profiting From It

Judit Reigl obituary
Hungarian artist who subverted ideas around gender in her large, gestural paintingsIn her interview for Art Press International’s special Women’s Day issue, March 1977, the artist Judit Reigl, who has died aged 97, recalled her dangerous escape from Hungary to Paris in 1950: her ninth attempt. She walked over a minefield at night, with the aid of a ladder placed on the ground, hoping to reach the express train from Budapest; the small yellow-orange squares of light, flashing in the b -

Why Rebuilding Beirut’s Arts Ecosystem Will Be So Much Harder Than It Would Be Elsewhere
Artists and institutions in Beirut, large and small, have rebuilt several times since the outbreak of Lebanon’s 15-year civil war in 1975 and through subsequent conflict. But even before the explosion that has wrecked the city, the country’s long-dysfunctional political system was spiraling, taking the currency, the economy and even the electricity grid along with it. Now, say many key figures in Beirut’s cultural life, Lebanon could really become a failed state. – Artne -

Critics tell Ronnie Wood to stick to music ahead of exhibition
Pastiche of Guernica featuring Rolling Stones dancing among ruins is target for scorn, but his technique wins praiseThey include an audacious riff on Picasso’s The Three Dancers with a naked Mick Jagger in full look-at-me strut as well as more gentle and calming pastoral scenes of the English countryside. The question is – can Ronnie Wood finally give up the day job? He is a great guitarist, but how good a visual artist is he? Ronnie Wood x Ashridge House runs 21-27 August Continue re -

At US Colleges: An Identity For Everyone
American academia is a hotbed of proliferating identities supported and largely shaped by the higher ranks of administrators, faculty, student groups, alumni, and trustees. Not all identities are equal in dignity, history, or weight. Race, gender, and sexual orientation were the three main dimensions of what in the 1970s began to be called identity politics. These traits continue to be key today. But affirmed identities are mushrooming. The slightest shared characteristic, once anchored in a na -
Mariinsky Ballet Restarted Performances, And COVID Struck. Now It’s Been Shut Down Again
“[The company] hosted galas at its St. Petersburg theaters, featuring solos and duets performed by dancers who had undergone weekly tests for coronavirus. More ambitiously, it had begun staging full-length ballets, with a run of … La Sylphide.” Audience members were kept masked and distanced, and the theatre was keeping the dancers on a fairly thorough testing and safety regime. That wasn’t enough: 30 company members have gotten sick, and ballet troupes elsewhere in Eur -

Radio Listenership Has Plunged. But NPR’s Listenership Is Up Ten Percent. Why?
Even as its legacy platform’s audience has declined, though, NPR says it is reaching more people than ever. The dip in radio listenership — 22 percent — has coincided with a record number of people turning to NPR on virtually every other platform. More people than ever are reaching NPR through the website, apps, livestreams, and smart speakers (“Alexa, I want to listen to NPR”). – NiemanLab -

The Inside Story Of An Inside Job: The Slow-Motion $8 Million Robbery Of The Carnegie Library
“Like nuclear power plants and sensitive computer networks, the safest rare book collections are protected by what is known as ‘defense in depth’ — a series of small, overlapping measures designed to thwart a thief who might be able to overcome a single deterrent. The Oliver Room, home to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s rare books and archives, was something close to the platonic ideal of this concept. Greg Priore, manager of the room starting in 1992, designe -

Putting An Orchestra Onstage While Maintaining Social Distancing Is A Puzzle (In More Than One Sense)
First, there are the obvious issues of placement: how far apart the string players must be, how much farther apart for the winds and brass, placing the conductor where everyone can see. In Los Angeles, there’s been a complicating issue: the union for the L.A. Phil and L.A. Chamber Orchestra worked out one set of rules while the union for studio musicians (which has jurisdiction over some of the Phil’s and LACO’s work) had already worked out another. Jim Farber reports on how i -
Judge Raises Amount Tavis Smiley Must Pay PBS To $2.6 Million
In late 2017, PBS suspended Smiley’s late-night talk show following sexual harassment allegations from staffers. Smiley sued the network, which countersued, and in March 2020, a jury awarded PBS $1.7 million. But PBS argued that Smiley should pay additional money pursuant to his contract’s morals clause. The judge has agreed, and has, in effect, ordered Smiley to pay back the network and the show’s underwriters for the last two seasons. – Variety -

With NYC Museums Cutting Staff, Directors’ High Salaries Get More Scrutiny
“Many of New York’s museum leaders have taken pay cuts to offset some of the financial damage their institutions are suffering from their Covid-related closures. But at a time when museums are facing their most severe financial downturn in decades, one that has led some to make painful cuts in staff, critics are questioning whether such reductions go far enough.” – The New York Times -
