Anxiety and fear is pervading the $2.5bn sector, which is calling on the government to step in before ‘irreparable damage’ is causedThe Australian arts industry operates on a knife-edge at the best of times – but in recent years, the pressure has reached boiling point: local creators have faced millions in funding cuts, with draconian laws decimating once thriving scenes. Now, with the coronavirus pandemic causing the Australian government to recommend any gathering of more than -
Egypt’s Oldest Pyramid Reopens After 14-Year Closure
Assembled between 2630 and 2611 B.C. in Saqqara, Egypt, the pyramid, where Djoser and 11 of his daughters were buried upon their deaths, contains roughly 11.6 million cubic feetof stone and clay. Looping through and around the burial chambers is awinding, maze-like network of tunnels that was likely designed toprevent theft but apparently weakened the building’s structuralintegrity. – Smithsonian -
Does Democratization Of Culture Mean The End Of Audience?
“My current research situates audience development within work on cultureas a vocation, and wider debates around the democratisation of cultureand cultural democracy. Audience development both replicates andreproduces (rather than challenges) the dominant cultural hegemony –most notably in subsidised cultural institutions. As such, it hastraditionally been seen as a management tool for the democratisation ofculture.” – Arts Professional -
Sculptor J. Seward Johnson Jr, 89
Johnson, a sculptor who may be responsible for more doubletakes than anyone in history thanks to his countless lifelike creationsin public places — a businessman in downtown Manhattan, surfers at aFlorida beach, a student eating a sandwich on a curb in Princeton, N.J. —died on Tuesday at his home in Key West, Fla. – The New York Times -
Modernism And The African American Experience
Back at thebeginning of the 20th century, artists such as Picasso, Braque andMatisse turned to African art for new ideas about how to represent theworld, creating figures with masklike faces, flattened forms andbackgrounds of vibrant patterning. They weren’t just borrowing visualideas, however. Many of them believed in a connection between what theysaw as primitive culture and the deeper wellsprings of psychologicallife, a way to reference and represent urges and emotional drives thathad -
An Opera That Works To Reinvent The Form

Needed: A Rethink Of The Digital Millennium Copyright Act And Creativity
The platforms are under no legal obligation to proactively seek outinfringement and remove it, nor – most annoyingly of all – do they everhave to permanently remove an infringing work. “Notice andtakedown” does not mean “notice and stay-down,” which results in anongoing game of Whack-A-Mole for copyright owners who get a workremoved, only to see it pop up again somewhere else on the internet…again, and again, and again… – Cr -
Was London’s Millennium Dome Really The Enormous Fiasco Everyone Remembers? Not Entirely …
It cost more than £750 million (that was well over a billion dollars then), the grand opening at the turn of the millennium was one snafu after another, actual visitor numbers were half of projections, and the UK government eventually sold it for a pound. But families loved it at the time, and it’s now the most popular live music venue on Earth. Imogen West-Knights recounts how it all happened in this week’s Guardian Long Read. – The Guardian -
A High Stress Threat To The Arts
There will soon be lots of demands for emergency funds, to bail outsmall businesses, cab drivers, restaurants, and so on. Cultural workers, who contribute so much to urban life in normal times and who will be soseverely missed in abnormal ones, need relief starting now, before the world they belong to withers away.– New York Magazine -

How Inigo Philbrick Became The Talented Mr. Ripley Of Art Dealers
“Inigo Philbrick probably didn’t set out to become one of the art world’s great enigmas when, at the age of 24, he opened a gallery and consultancy in London” and went on to become a conspicuously big spender. “Not if what he really wanted was to be seen nowhere but talked about everywhere. Yet that is what happened in the fall of 2019: a vanishing act.” He hasn’t been charged with a crime (yet), but he is definitely a fugitive. – The New York Tim -

Egypt’s Favorite Street Music Banned By Government
“Mahraganat music, fast and loud, soared in popularity following Egypt’s 2011 Arab Spring revolts, which toppled the country’s longtime autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak, who died last month. Stephen Sondheim At 90: The Master Of Mixed Emotions
Ben Brantley: “When it comes to emotions, Sondheim — more than any other composer from the Broadway songbook — is the one I trust to tell me the truth. That’s because in the world of Sondheim, feelings never come singly but in battalions. Even his simplest, most assertive melodies usually sound as if they’re being pulled in contradictory directions.” – The New York Times -
Stephen Sondheim At 90: Not Just A Great Songwriter, A Great Playwright
Jesse Green: “Having long taken for granted that he is the greatest composer-lyricist the United States has produced, we can perhaps now notice that he is also an artist to place in the line of America’s foundational 20th-century playwrights. In years to come, critics will have trouble understanding how our time put him in one basket but put Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, August Wilson and Edward Albee in another.” – The New York Times -

What Happens To ‘The Merchant Of Venice’ When Shylock Is A Woman?
Carey Perloff, who directed Seana McKenna in the role last year in Calgary: “I am not always convinced that cross-gender casting helps illuminate Shakespeare; many of the plays focus so specifically on gender that swapping out men for women can sometimes muddy the actual narrative or intent of the play. But in the case of Shylock, who is the ultimate ‘other’ in the play, gender served to crack open the drama in fascinating ways.” – American Theatre -
