Sixty UK Music Institutions Promise Gender Parity By 2022
More than 60 organisations, including some of the UK’s highest-funded companies and prominent performing arts conservatoires, have promised to take positive action towards equality. The Keychange project is the brainchild of charitable funding body the PRS Foundation. It was launched in 2018, when 180 music festivals committed to programming gender-balanced line-ups by 2022. – The Stage -
Pilgrimage: Is It Better To See Tintoretto In A Museum Or In The Original Setting?
Phil Kennicott: “Yes, go see Tintoretto in Venice, but never slight the power of a museum to present art with a clarity and care one rarely finds in the ordinary world in which that art was made.” – Washington Post -
Ha: New York Bookstore Owner Makes Case That His Stores Ought To Get Tax Breaks Amazon Was Going To Get
His argument for assistance is simple: The stores generate $650,000 in annual tax revenue for the city and state, and his 75 staffers (on a payroll of $1.7 million in 2018) spend “virtually all” their income in the city. In addition to its status as a small-but-mighty economic engine, he adds, “Book Culture contributes simply by being what we are, storefront businesses active in a community.” -

The Académie Française Has Ruled On The Difference Between A Slut And A Bastard
Yes, with this recent bulletin, les immortels of the august body founded by Cardinal Richelieu in 1634 want to be sure that all French-speakers properly distinguish between une salope (a slut) and un salaud (a bastard) — and they warn that the alternatively gendered forms of these words (un salop for men and une salaude for women) are archaic and should be avoided. (Twitterverse, à l’attaque!) – The Local (France) -
A Creepy Way Of Thinking About Art: Investing In It
Both of these reservoirs of dark matter—trophy works destined for museum accession or philanthropic donation and unsold inventory—serve to keep prices afloat and maintain artificial scarcity for the thinly traded population of works that do come to market each season. – Artsy -

The So-Cal Native Who’s Giving Cambodian Classical Dance A Queer Twist
“[Prumsodun] Ok, a Long Beach, California, native whose parents were Cambodian refugees, not only restages traditional works of Khmer classical dance but also uses the stories and vocabulary of the ancient style to create new works that center LGBTQ+ characters and perspectives. In the process, he’s helped to revitalize and bring global attention to an art form that was nearly wiped out with the vast majority of its practitioners in the Khmer Rouge genocide of the late 1970s.” -
Donachie Rhodes Ryan review – celebrating 'disappeared' female artists
Freelands Foundation, London
Uniting the work of Jacqueline Donachie, Lis Rhodes and Veronica Ryan, this show demonstrates how dynamic art could be if only there were more women at workJacqueline Donachie’s An Era of Small Pleasures is based on those tiny moments of light relief parents experience when their children are young – maybe over a silent five-minute cup of coffee. But it is not relevant that the people that assisted Donachie in creating it were all women with young childre -

An Oral History Of The Orgy Scene In Kubrick’s ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ (It Was Supposed To Be A Lot Better Than It Came Out)
Turns out Stanley Kubrick and colleagues worked on and rehearsed the scene for weeks, and it was highly (if not always clearly) thought out. Then Kubrick died, and the rest of the team had to figure out how to avoid an NC-17 rating without him. Journalist Bilge Ebiri talks to Kubrick’s assistant director and personal assistant, the choreographer (yes, there was one), composer, dancers, and actors involved (though not Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman). – New York Magazine -

Yannick And Jaap Sitting Around Talking
Jaap van Zweden: “If you see Dallas, it’s a real sports town. If you see Hong Kong, it’s a real business town. And I think we are both very fortunate because New York is a real arts town. That is a big plus for us.”Yannick Nézet-Séguin: “At the same time, in New York we should always — and I know this is true for the Met — we should always be listening and watching what’s going on elsewhere in the country, so we can represent it bett -
Letter: John McLean obituary
As Charles Darwent observes, the painter John McLean wrote for the Guardian. He was filling in brilliantly for Norbert Lynton, who had left for the Arts Council.
