Rod Stewart: 'I was surrounded by gay men in the 70s'
Forty years ago, Rod Stewart released The Killing of Georgie, a groundbreaking single about the murder of a gay man – now tragically relevant again in the light of events in OrlandoRod Stewart has long favored story songs, going back to 1971’s classic Maggie May. Schubert Ensemble review – in perfect harmony with nature and Ted Hughes
Queen Mary College, London
A new work by Cheryl Frances-Hoad had vision and radiance, while chamber music by Louise Farrenc and Schumann was beautifully articulatedCheryl Frances-Hoad’s new piece for the Schubert Ensemble was partly inspired by visits to a local park, where experiencing elements of the natural world helped her, she says, to respect the land and feel a connection to it; poems by Ted Hughes also played their part in underpinning this 10-minute slow movement that alternates, -

Road to ruin: songs about cars and sadness
The US has long celebrated the car as an emblem of youth and defiance – but a few songs have reshaped it into an image of angst, anguish and broken dreamsFrom Mustang Sally to Thelma & Louise, the car has always been a potent symbol of freedom in American pop culture. Tannhäuser review – a clear staging but the singing disappoints
Longborough, Moreton-in-Marsh
Wagner’s opera of extremes is directed with striking simplicity, but John Treleaven’s tormented Tannhäuser grates on the ear Pilgrimage to Rome is a central part of Wagner’s early opera Tannhäuser, so there is something emblematic about this new production at Longborough, which in the last decade has established a magnetic pull for Wagner followers. The medieval tradition of the Minnesingers and their song contests certainly gives the con -
