British Indie Band Killed In Car Bridge Plunge
All four members of British indie band Viola Beach and their manager have been killed after their car plunged off a bridge in Sweden. Police divers recovered the bodies of singer Kris Leonard, guitarist River Reeves, bassist Tomas Lowe, drummer Jack Dakin and the band's manager Craig Tarry, from the water, around 40km (25 miles) from Stockholm. The Warrington group had played a gig at a Swedish music festival on Friday night. -

Kanye West: The Life of Pablo review – 'You can see why his immodesty rubs people up the wrong way'
When Kanye West’s album is good, it’s very good. So why does he spend so much time trying to show the world what a thundering plonker he is? Related: Kanye West unveils new album The Life of Pablo at elaborate, 'ramshackle' event The 21st century offers a panoply of options for the pop star wishing to launch their new album. They can do it in time-honoured style: working the interview circuit, touring hard, keeping their fingers crossed for good reviews. They can go for the surprise -

Rihanna, Usher, Wonder honor Lionel Richie on Grammy weekend
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rihanna, Usher, Stevie Wonder and John Legend paid tribute to Lionel Richie in a musical tribute touching on his roots in R&B to his string of romantic, easy-listening ballads that ruled the airwaves in the 1980s. -
The Wave Pictures: A Season in Hull review – adventures in retro recording
(Wymeswold)For their last album, 2015’s Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon, the Wave Pictures (born: Leicestershire, live: London) collaborated with punk hero Billy Childish and recorded on vintage analogue equipment. This time around, they’ve gone one step more primitive. Armed with acoustic instruments, the prolific indie trio – fronted by Jonathan Richman acolyte Dave Tattersall – convened in an east London studio and shared one microphone. No mixing, no nothing; the reco -
The lab playlist: 16 great songs about science (and a bad one)
A motley collection of musicians have turned their attentions to science over the years - sometimes rigorously, sometimes tenuously and sometimes downright inaccurately. Examine our seventeen specimens and post your own findings below the line. Continue reading... -
Rokia Traoré: Né So review – reflective and lyrical
(Nonesuch)The Malian singer continues to cut a singular trajectory through modern music. On the heels of a fine, Miles-esque outing with trumpeter Erik Truffaz comes a sixth solo album, like 2013’s Beautiful Africa cut with producer John Parish, though with fewer rock influences. The guitars and ngoni still murmur and jingle with the odd Dire Straits-ish riff (an early influence), but the mood is more reflective. Traoré’s vocals remain smooth, agile and sometimes challenging; -
Marlon Williams: Marlon Williams review – unconventional country rock
(Dead Oceans)As a former choirboy turned classical music student whose father was a member of a punk band, Marlon Williams was never going to make a conventional country-rock LP. Sure enough, the New Zealander’s solo debut is part Jeff Buckley, part early rock’n’roll, as underlined by his cover of a Billy Fury song (I’m Lost Without You). Williams’s voice is shown off best on another cover, the folk standard When I Was a Young Girl, every second of which rings true. -
João Gilberto: Getz/Gilberto '76 review – live, minimalist and spellbinding
(Resonance)Despite its title, this is Gilberto’s album. In 1976, he was co-starring with Getz’s quartet at Keystone Korner, a San Francisco jazz club, and the CD was compiled from recordings made during their week-long run. Appearances by the perfectionist, semi-reclusive Gilberto were rare, and there’s an atmosphere of occasion about the silence into which he half-whispers the Portuguese lyrics, accompanied by his minimalist but infinitely subtle guitar. Even Getz’s gorg -
Basia Bulat: Good Advice review – a rich and raw return
(Secret City)Compared with Canadian indie-folkie Basia Bulat’s first three albums, her latest feels supercharged. While Bulat’s previous sound was lovely, always tasteful, mostly mournful, here she comes arrestingly alive, invigorated firstly by the roiling emotions and rich material of a raw breakup and secondly by warm, glowing production from My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, who brings out previously lurking pop and soul tendencies. This new Bulat barnstorms the stomping, accu -
Lissie: My Wild West – grownup midwestern pop songs
(Cooking Vinyl)The third album from Elisabeth Maurus chronicles a period of flux: moving back to the midwest after a decade in California, and leaving Sony after two UK top 20 albums. It opens impressively – Hollywood and Hero mine the same seam of exquisite sadness that Lana Del Rey does so well, while Don’t You Give Up on Me mirrors the FM-friendly folk-pop of Haim. Equally powerful, Ojai is a stripped-back and heartfelt goodbye to her adopted west coast hometown. My Wild West isn& -
Journey: Two Hundred Years of Harpsichord Music CD review – a quirky retrospective
Trevor Pinnock
(LINN)Inspired by the journey of the Spanish composer Antonio de Cabezón around Europe, Trevor Pinnock has assembled a quirky and intensely personal collection spanning two centuries of music and revisiting his career: Byrd and Bull pieces he discovered when he was 13, Bach’s lyrical Sixth French Suite and Handel’s great G major Chaconne, rounded off with a trilogy of Scarlatti sonatas. At the recital’s heart is a wonderfully wistful account of Sweelinck&r -
Bob Chilcott: Sun, Moon, Sea and Stars review – seductive and dreamy
Tenebrae Consort
(Signum)Renowned for their recordings of Tallis and Bruckner, the Tenebrae Consort, drawn from Nigel Short’s equally celebrated Tenebrae Choir, here bring the same perfect technique and miraculous sense of ensemble to 22 instantly attractive songs and arrangements by Bob Chilcott, Short’s colleague from their days in the King’s Singers. In an hour of exquisite singing we are taken from the seductive heights of En la Macarenita and Fascinating Rhythm to the -
Marie Jaëll: Symphonic and Piano Music CD review – a neglected Romantic composer
Soloists, Brussels Philharmonic/Niquet, Orchestre national de Lille/Swensen
(Palazzetto Bru Zane) (3 CDs)This set, which comes with a short book, introduces the French-born Marie Jaëll (1846-1925), now being rediscovered as a composer of late Romantic music. Given early support by Liszt, Jaëll faced many struggles as a female composer-pianist and ended her days a recluse and pedagogue. The kinds of terms used to describe her have included “barbaric”, ”headstrong&rdquo -
Beyoncé: the superstar who brought black power to the Super Bowl | Observer profile
With her spectacular intervention in front of millions of TV viewers, Beyoncé brought radical politics to mainstream pop. What is behind her journey to the heart of the new civil rights movement? It could be considered deeply ironic that a group plans this week to protest outside the National Football League’s headquarters in New York against Beyoncé’s “racist” half-time performance at the Super Bowl. For the performance was all about the new-style protests a
