Woody Guthrie: fighting Donald Trump from beyond the grave
Billy Bragg, who has performed Guthrie’s songs with Wilco, says the legendary singer’s anger at his landlord, Trump’s father, shows his radical spirit still inspires
Until he was humbled in Iowa on Monday night, it appeared that nothing could stop Donald Trump in his bid to become the Republican party’s nominee. However, a folk singer who died in 1967 is also unexpectedly proving to be a thorn in the side of Trump’s candidacy. Over 60 years ago, Woody Guthrie, the to -
Lady Gaga to perform 'multisensory' Bowie tribute at Grammys
(Reuters) - Lady Gaga will lead what organizers called an "experiential tribute" to late British singer David Bowie at the Grammy Awards this month. The Recording Academy said Gaga would perform three or four of Bowie's songs in a "multisensory testament" to Bowie's creativity as a musician whose work constantly evolved over five decades. Bowie's unexpected death at age 69 in January after a secret cancer diagnosis shocked fans around the world and came just two days after the release of a criti -
Kendrick Lamar, Coldplay, Rihanna benefit from RIAA streaming rule – but is it good for music?
In an age where a large proportion of music is consumed through streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music or Pandora, it is surprising to learn that figures from these sources were not previously attributed to an artist's total record sales in the US. Under the association's new regulations, 1,500 audio and video streams of a song or album is now considered the equivalent of 10 physical or digital sales, so is therefore likely to be easier for an artist's body of work to reach gold or plat -
Rihanna's Anti sold fewer than 1,000 copies in a week. Is it a flop?
Sales of the star’s much-delayed album look dire on paper – but in a world of streaming, free downloads and blockbuster tours, that may not matter any moreWhatever way you slice it, the release of Anti, Rihanna’s eighth studio album, has been a shambles. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it has been a disaster, especially as the recorded music industry finds itself in the middle of a huge recalibration of what does and what doesn’t count as success. The shambolic par -
Novelist Returns With Another Grime Banger ‘Break In Your House’
There aren’t many people who can host a radio set for their nineteenth birthday and invite the likes of Skepta, P Money and Jammer to touch mic. There also aren’t many people who can make a Grime track from 2016 sound as though it was made back in 2004, in the early days of the scene’s history. Yet Novelist has managed to do both of those things in the space of two weeks. -

Racism is Phil Anselmo's problem, not metal's
The ex-Pantera singer’s antics prove metal has its share of racist idiots, but no more than other genres – and its real purpose is to celebrate the downtrodden, not oppress themIt’s impossible to feel a shred of sympathy for anyone who stands on stage in public and bellows “White power!” while throwing a Nazi salute, even if they have made some great records in the past. Although Phil Anselmo has issued a public and seemingly heartfelt apology for his behaviour at a -

Camille O'Sullivan review – high-energy mischief with flashes of magic
Roundhouse, London
The hypnotic performer hurtles her way through costume changes and an inconsistent set that sometimes overpowers the delicacy of her storytellingCamille O’Sullivan growls, pours a slug of red wine and hops, bunny-style, across the stage. “Welcome lovelies” she says. “Tonight, we’re going to do songs that I love. Mulatu Astatke review – rousing borderless jazz vision from Ethiopia
Roundhouse, London
Mulatu Astatke’s exuberant blend of the best in African and western-themed improvisation is a finely balanced craftNobody fuses the sounds and rhythms of African, American and European music the way Mulatu Astatke does. The Ethiopian multi-instrumentalist balances a songwriter’s seductiveness with a borderless vision and a relaxed faith in left-field improvisers. Much of this Roundhouse gig sounded off the cuff, but the trim, smiling, white-clad 72-year-old at the -
L'Étoile review – a clumsy staging but the music is a gem
Royal Opera House, London
Focus is lost with the transformation of Emmanuel Chabrier’s sexy, witty opéra bouffe into an extravagant postmodern fantasy“It is fatal to be boring,” Emmanuel Chabrier once remarked. L’Étoile, receiving its belated Covent Garden premiere, was the work that put him on the musical map at its Paris premiere in 1877. It’s one of the finest of opéras bouffes, witty, sexy and delightfully written, so it’s a shame that -
