‘There aren’t many great bands, are there?’ – Money’s Jamie Lee on writing, anxiety and the spectacle of Wetherspoon's
His band’s new album is called Suicide Songs. But the lead singer and guitarist is surprised to be told it sounds gloomy ...A shade over two years ago, I sat in a London pub while Jamie Lee explained why he didn’t think the debut album he had released with his group Money, The Shadow of Heaven, was much good, despite the gushing reviews and the fervent fans. Just before Christmas 2015, in that same pub – in the same seats, in fact – he says he is sure their new record, Su -
Janine Jansen: Brahms and Bartók review – every phrase says something
Jansen/Accademia di Santa Cecilia/Pappano
(Decca)Janine Jansen’s recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto – a landmark disc for any violinist – is taken live from concerts in Rome with Antonio Pappano and his Santa Cecilia orchestra. Their sound is rich and weighty, the better to support Jansen’s interpretation, itself heavyweight yet characteristically mercurial. Jansen’s playing glows, and the second theme of the first movement really sings; here and throughout, th -

David Bowie: Blackstar review – a spellbinding break with his past
Taking a headlong plunge into electro-acoustic jazz, Bowie’s 25th album is lyrically inscrutable and thrillingly strangeAs he reaches his 69th birthday, David Bowie finds himself in a rarefied position, even by the standards of the rock aristocracy. He does not give interviews, make himself available to promote new releases, or explain himself in any way. He does not tour the world playing his hits. In fact, he doesn’t do anything that rock stars are supposed to do. It’s behavi -

Christopher Maltman/Graham Johnson review – every second was outstanding
Wigmore Hall, London
Maltman’s all-Schubert recital focused on epic rarities. He’s a natural storyteller, and was more than matched by pianist Graham JohnsonChristopher Maltman’s recital in the Wigmore Hall’s complete Schubert series was a powerhouse affair that focused primarily on epic rarities that push at the boundaries of the art song as a genre. He opened, dauntingly, with the Szene aus Faust, a setting of the church scene from Goethe’s play, effectively a one -
