The powerhouse pop singer’s new video casts Colosimo as her love interest and was inspired by the work of American photographer Cindy ShermanTwelve years is a long time between drinks, but that’s what has passed between Tina Arena’s 2001 Just Me, and her next English-language album of original material, called Reset (she had a few French-language and cover albums in between).Reset, Arena admits, was a risky venture. “There is always a huge chance that your audience has mo -
Don Henley: ‘The Internet Is Slowly but Surely Killing the Idea of Copyright’
…from Don Henley’s recent interview with Charlie Rose:
Charlie Rose: Most great artists, have at least told me, I’d say a majority have come to this table, many many great artists… they say it’s hard work.
Don Henley: Someone once said that writing is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, and I think it’s true. To finish a great work, you might get a great epiphany or a great idea that comes to you in the middle of the night, and you start writing and -

John Peel: 'If something has me confused, I want to play it on the radio'
With David Cavanagh’s social history of John Peel’s shows winning rave reviews, we hear from the great man himself, in this 1971 Melody Maker interview, taken from Rock’s BackpagesSomehow I always associate John Peel with the word “nice”. A long as I can remember he has been calling everything nice. Hamsters are nice. Malayan seven-string guitars are nice. The Pig is nice. So is walking in the park. Nice. Really nice.VD isn’t nice, but then he didn’t say -
Naughty Boy: from pizza delivery man to Beyoncé's British connection
The hot producer might still live with his parents but that hasn’t stopped Sam Smith, Mary J Blige and Queen Bey herself calling on his talents. He talks about staying normal, mosque selfies and his big bust-up with Zayn MalikNaughty Boy’s recording studio is, on entry, an almighty dump. True to the spirit of a teenage boy’s bedroom, it’s painted in gloopy black with towers of clutter Jenga-ing on every surface and wall: a tableful of San Pellegrino, a Nerf gun, a terribl -

Arcade Fire, Metallica, Green Day, and Method Man Are All Releasing Cassette Tapes…
Like most people, we’ve heard lots of chatter about a cassette comeback over the years, but zero evidence of any actual cassette sales. Now, that could be changing, with a nostalgia wave potentially lifting the left-for-dead format.
Something’s happening this time around, and artists are responding. Just last week, LA-based artist Transviolet mysteriously started sending cassettes in the mail, and even dropping a copy to the personal home address of a DMN wri -

Phil Woods obituary
Fluent and creative saxophonist regarded as one of the world’s leading jazz soloistsThe mid-1950s saw not only the first significant strides in the career of the American saxophonist Phil Woods, who has died aged 83, but also the sudden departure of Charlie Parker, bowing unceremoniously out of his chaotically brilliant life in 1955 at only 34. The young Woods played Parker’s instrument, the alto saxophone; he had Parker’s dazzling fluency and speed; and he had the master&rsquo -

Music as a torture weapon: exploring the dark side
A composer’s highest joys have long been used to violate prisoners’ minds, destroying their inner beings. And not just at Guantanamo, either
We usually talk about the way music moves us – to joy, passion, excitement, melancholy, fury even – but music can also be put to much darker uses, something that is rarely discussed. Over the course of Radio 3’s Why Music? weekend, Morag Grant and Suzanne Cusick threw light on the disturbing history of music’s use in, and -

BBCSSO/Runnicles review – warm, bold and incisive
Usher Hall, Edinburgh
Donald Runnicles started his final season as the BBCSSO’s chief conductor with a clear and thoughtful account of Mahler’s incomplete 10th SymphonyThere was bittersweetness to the brilliance of this concert: it was the start of Donald Runnicles’s last season as chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and it stung a bit to be reminded just how chiselled and warm, how bold and honed and incisive the orchestra’s sound is under his baton. -

It was all a stream: hip-hop's new music model may actually work
As Tidal and Apple Music offer exclusives featuring the genre’s top artists, has hip-hop figured out how to make fans actually pay for music again?I listen to new music all the time, but pay very little for it. Part of that is owing to the perks of being a hip-hop writer, but mostly it’s because I’ve long subscribed to streaming services. Ten bucks a month covers much of my needs, and YouTube fills in most gaps. Here and there I’ll support an artist I admire by buying the -
