Jean Ritchie obituary
American folk singer responsible for a revival of Appalachian musicWhen Jean Ritchie, who has died aged 92, emerged on to the embryonic New York folk scene in the 1940s, her repertoire of family songs from the Anglo-American tradition of the southern Appalachian mountains was seized upon by folksong enthusiasts as proof of the veracity of the old music. It was a tradition that had first been exposed to a wider audience by the English folksong collector Cecil Sharp in 1916-18: indeed, Sharp had n -

Honegger: Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher – CD review: superbly vivid choral singing
Cotillard/Gallais/Lieder Camera and Madrigal Choirs/Barcelona SO and Catalonia National O/Soustrot (Alpha)First performed in concert in 1938 and fully staged for the first time in Zurich in 1942, Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher is the only one of Arthur Honegger’s large-scale works to have maintained at least a toehold in the repertory. For Honegger, it seems, the dividing line between opera and oratorio was often a very thin one – his 1925 opera Judith later appeared in a version for the con -

Nancy Sinatra in 1966: 'No career is as important as a husband and children'
This week, Rock’s Backpages celebrates Nancy Sinatra’s 75th birthday with a piece from February 1966, originally published in the New Musical Express
Her boots may have been made for walkin’, but Nancy Sinatra’s Boots also jumped, ran and scrambled up the pop charts in both America and Britain, reaching No 1 in the NME Chart in only three weeks! It’s a fantastic instant-success story for a record that came about quite accidentally. As I talked with Nancy on the set of Shivaree, a local -
Nas review – rapper takes nostalgic tour through hip-hop perfection
O2 Academy, GlasgowTracks are more invoked than performed as the rapper revisits his influential album Illmatic, two decades onNas’s 1994 debut album, Illmatic – a gritty document of Queens, New York, in the pits of a crack epidemic, characterised by complex rhymes over a haze of vintage funk, soul, and jazz samples – is hip-hop perfection. Huge sales, critical acclaim, academic books andan Oscar-tipped documentary have elevated it to near-mythical status. The tone is slightly off from the -

Why we’re excited about seeing Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie at Isle of Wight
Those heading for the Isle of Wight festival will see something Mac fans feared they would never see again: Christine McVie’s return after a 16-year absenceTo listen to Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie speak, you’d never guess she was a member of one of the world’s most successful – not to mention debauched and dysfunctional – bands of all time. Level-headed and prone to understatement when I interviewed her for the Guardian in 2013, she described the songwriting gift that enabled her -

The playlist: indie - Beach Baby, Gwenno, Everything Everything, Daughn Gibson
From modern cults and Welsh science fiction to dreamy pop and off-kilter US road trips, there’s plenty to brood on here Possibly their most challenging album yet, Get To Heaven (given five stars by Q, dubbed a “masterpiece” by DIY) has already spawned the apocalyptic pop monster Distant Past and now delivers Regret, a 60s-inspired single which grapples with the quartet’s usual macabre themes – technology’s evil grip on humanity, a pained nostalgia for the past, a crippling fear of th -
Perfect Pussy’s Meredith Graves: taking the feminist fight to punk's patriarchy

The Replacements review – a scintillating return
Roundhouse, London
The reunited band do absolute justice to Paul Westerberg’s bruised, defiant anthems of youth – and also retain their ragged edgesThe challenge facing most reunited bands is simple: play your greatest hits with enough sincerity to convince the audience you’re enjoying it, get out of the venue and collect the money. For the Replacements, making their first visit to Europe in almost a quarter of a century, it’s rather different. Their legend has been built on tales of dru -
Daniel Barenboim review – reveals the essence of Schubert's piano writing
Royal Festival Hall, London
In his final two Schubert recitals, there was a sense of spontaneous encounter in everything Barenboim played, with the details never subsumed into a predetermined whole Related: Daniel Barenboim review – interesting rather than revelatory Schubert playing The final two legs of Daniel Barenboim’s four concert, 11-sonata Schubert series culminated, as it must, in the last sonata of them all: the B flat, D960. But the journey towards this inevitable summation began -
Wu-Tang and wordplay: have hip-hop lyrics really lost their edge?
The genre was famed for metaphor-loaded rhymes, but figures such as GZA say it’s reached a nadir. Is it just a case of good old-fashioned New York snobbery?Rapper GZA ruffled feathers with his recent opinion essay The Lost Art of Lyricism, which makes the case that today’s MCs aren’t writing dope lines and verses. “Rappers aren’t grabbing you anymore, it’s not pulling me in,” he wrote, before adding: “It’s irrelevant. It’s not about the art form anymore.” This follows in a -

Janet Jackson: 10 of the best
With Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson has created some of modern R&B’s most enduring music. Here’s the best of itThe story goes that, despite her pop lineage, the young Janet Jackson had no interest in becoming a singer. Instead, brilliantly, she wanted to be a jockey or an entertainment lawyer. However, her father Joseph Jackson coerced her into a recording studio, became her manager and set about securing her a record deal with A&M. Unfortunately her two early, personality- -
