A Startling Decline In Admissions At London Museums
Between June and August 2017 a record 11.5 million overseas visitors came to the UK, up 6% on the same period last year. Among holiday-makers the increase was greater still, with 13% more choosing to spend their vacations in the UK. Despite this, a year-on-year comparison shows that visitor numbers from June to August were down at: British Museum (-3%), National Gallery (-19%), National Portrait Gallery (-41%), and Tate Modern (-37%) -

The Science Of Art Of Science And The Creative Impulse
The optimum complexity principle is just one of many examples that Wilson rallies in The Origins of Creativity, his latest plea for the grand unification of the sciences and the humanities. The two camps are often viewed as enemy combatants, or at least paisley and plaid—best kept apart—but Wilson is deeply impatient with academic partitioning. Artists, he argues, should have a grasp of basic neuroscience and how the brain evolved. Scientists must appreciate the humanities -

Are These The Next Models For Arts Criticism?
Is this caste system the future of theatre criticism? On one side a wading pool of compensated pros, on the other a swarming mass of unedited amateurs with domain names and hot takes? There must be alternatives. Luckily, new models have emerged to pick up the slack left by local media and elevate arts writing above snarky, thumbs-up-or-down consumer reporting. -

How The Trisha Brown Company Is Reinventing Itself After Her Death
The continued growth of the company is rare, given what often happens to dance organizations after their founder dies and there is no new repertory to tour. Ms. Brown, part of an influential generation that ushered in postmodern dance — she was an original member of the experimental 1960s collective Judson Dance Theater — was a maverick. -
A War Over Cuban Culture Is Playing Out In Miami
"At the end of September, county commissioners voted to remove $550,000 from the $4m grant promised to the Pérez Art Museum Miami (Pamm) for the current financial year. The money was allocated instead to the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, a small institution in Coral Gables, which opened in January." -

Egypt Is Cracking Down On Reading
"Nothing seems to disturb Egypt’s ruling cadres more than the written word. The recent litany of bans and shutdowns, including blocking hundreds of web pages online, illustrates what Cambridge University’s Khaled Fahmy, a prolific historian of the Middle East, called “an alarmist moment of crisis,” one in which Egypt’s authoritarian state of emergency laws have turned something as simple as reading into a dangerous act." -

A cross word: Turner prize winner Lubaina Himid's Guardian headline mashups
The artist takes issue with how the Guardian uses images of black people – so she recrafts its pages with graphic images of her own. Her curator explains the subtle power of these worksLubaina Himid takes pages from what she calls “our liberal paper” and paints across them. She investigates, each time, with colour and a sophisticated graphic touch. It is a patchwork of intervention: many of the original elements are left alone, exposing unwitting cultural habits and expectation -
Turner prize winner Lubaina Himid: 'I have more things to say – this gives me the chance'
The oldest artist ever to win the prize talks about turning Guardian pages into art, being forced out of London, and how she’ll be spending the prize money on funding her friends – and buying really fancy shoesThe Guardian headline mashupsLubaina Himid is bright-eyed and ferociously on the ball the morning after winning the Turner prize. Perhaps one advantage of being the oldest-ever winner, as the headlines baldly put it (she is 63), is the ability to receive the award with immense, -
From Matisse to Picasso: the best works by artists over 60
As the art of 62-year-old Turner prize winner Lubaina Himid shows, age melds wisdom and recklessness to remarkable effectThere’s a magic elixir than can keep you for ever young. It’s called being an artist. Yesterday, 63-year-old Lubaina Himid won the Turner prize, making her the oldest winner of the award – but that’s nothing.Louise Bourgeois was in her 80s when she created a terrifying giant spider that was the start of a creative roll still sparking with perverse thril -

Liza Dracup's best photograph: a barn owl hit by a lorry
‘At first, I kept quiet about my method. I liked to hear people guess. But I actually put it in a scanner’The label attached to this barn owl says: “Found dead on front of lorry, on run from Edinburgh to Bradford on 1 November 1974.” Because the owl had kept so many of its feathers, it probably hit the lorry later in the journey, nearer to Bradford. It’s part of the natural sciences collection of Bradford Museums. You could walk past the building and never know it w -
#MeToo has reached the art world. Don’t think it’s running out of steam | Peter Bradshaw
New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art may be right in refusing to remove a Balthus masterwork. But it is right that we are having this debateIs #MeToo entering a late phase? We might be settling into a stage in which quite a lot of men in media and showbusiness – but no other area of life – are being shamed into “stepping away” from their lucrative and prestigious jobs, but without revealing their payoffs or getting their collars felt. And there is danger of a new b -
