How Jazz And Classical Music Could Reconnect With An Audience
"Never in human history have people had easier access to music. As studies such as the 2016 Music Consumer Insider Report and Nielsen Music 360 Study of 2015 have revealed, a large portion (over 90%) of the U.S. population listens to music beyond 20 hours each week, and young people are especially engaged with music. While there is broad engagement with music, there are two musical genres which have increasingly moved to the periphery of ordinary life; the very two genres that I would argue have -

UK National Theatre Introduces Glasses That Caption Performances For Deaf Audiences
The glasses will enable D/deaf and hard of hearing audiences to read live captioning on the lenses during a performance, removing the need for captioning screens in the auditorium. NT director Rufus Norris said the glasses mean that for the first time, D/deaf audiences will be able to attend any performance during a production's run, rather then rely on the limited number of captioned performances – up to four per show – that are currently scheduled. -

Research: Brainstorming Is Better If You Tell An Embarrassing Story
"Candor led to greater creativity. Thus, we propose a new rule for brainstorming sessions: Tell a self-deprecating story before you start. As uncomfortable as this may seem, especially among colleagues you would typically want to impress, the result will be a broader range of creative ideas, which will surely impress them even more." -

What Exactly Is 'Cultural Memoir'? Margo Jefferson Explains
"For me, cultural memoir is a mutating definition. I first began to think in that way when I was working with the boundaries between criticism - literary, cultural, or whatever - which I had done for so many years, and memoir. I realised that I needed, in some way, to merge and to keep those two forms in dialogue, interrogating - as we like to say - each other. So, I began to think of cultural memoir. Initially I was just working obviously with non-fiction but, as you can see, fiction and theatr -
Report: Arts Organizations Are Experimenting Less With Digital
More arts organisations are using the internet and digital technology for revenue generation – such as by selling tickets online or accepting donations – and they are increasingly using technology to enhance audience engagement. But overall they are engaging in fewer ‘digital activities’. -
J.G. Ballard, Prophet Of Climate Change?
"Consider the images coming out of South Florida" - let alone Puerto Rico - "the past few weeks: sailboats capsized and clotting on the shore; high-rises looking on, humiliated by their reflection in the flooded streets; palm carnage. These could easily be used to illustrate J.G. Ballard's 1962 novel, The Drowned World." Hunter Braithwaite makes the case. -
What Hollywood Movie-Makers Are Learning From TV (And It's Changing Movies)
These days, for many screenwriters, the studio system can feel like a small, small, small, small world. And Hollywood film writers — along with everyone else — have noticed a simultaneous boom in Peak TV. Which means that, for Hollywood screenwriters, even as studio slates shrink and become more attuned to event blockbusters, opportunity on the small screen abounds. “Premium cable and the entrance of Netflix and Amazon hastened this movement toward the idea that a TV serie -
Watching Two DC Theater Giants At Work
"As artistic neighbors go, Howard Shalwitz and Michael Kahn appear to be miles apart. Shalwitz runs the new-plays troupe Woolly Mammoth Theatre; Kahn heads the classical Shakespeare Theatre Company. Woolly seats 265; the STC’s two stages combined hold more than 1,200. ... Swinging up and down Seventh Street between the Lansburgh and Woolly from morning till night, these are glimpses of a day in the life as Shalwitz and Kahn gear up for their latest shows and power down their leadership rol -

What Other Species Can Teach Us About How Culture Works
"Cultures are not just the passive accumulation of customs and traditions; they are formed, and then sustained by a fine balance between social forces. And we can learn from other species about the biological origin of those forces – as well as how these forces are now shaping the future of our culture." -
Atlanta's New Contemporary Ballet Troupe Makes Its Debut
After Atlanta Ballet's new artistic director, Gennadi Nedvigin, took over last year, five of the company's dancers (including one who had applied for Nedvigin's position) decided to split off and form Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre, which gives its first performances this month. "While American ballet tends to emphasize youth and athleticism, [John] Welker and the rest of the Terminus five envisioned a company that would showcase more mature dancers as artists capable of creating nuanced and poi -

Does The Field Of Literary Studies Have A Future?
"What, exactly, is literary studies? Is it a kind of history, a branch of philosophy, the study of rhetoric? Is it about becoming a better reader, in an ethical or technical sense? It’s not about learning how to write; that’s what MFA programs are for. One might turn to histories of the discipline in an effort to clear things up — but here, too, the same confusions apply. The history of methods of scholarship and criticism is its own subfield, and one can find convi -

'The Star-Spangled Banner': A Radical History
"Last weekend's NFL drama touched on many issues, including police brutality, racism, and free speech. For many who opposed the protests, however, it all came down to one thing: respecting the flag and our country's national anthem. But while critics claim that the anthem is above politics, radical uses and re-writings of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' are, in fact, older than the song as we know it." (audio) -

It's Popular To Bash Nation-States. But Here's Why They're Still Important
Among the intelligentsia, the nation-state finds few advocates. Most often, it is regarded as ineffectual – morally irrelevant, or even reactionary – in the face of the challenges posed by globalisation. Economists and centrist politicians tend to view globalism’s recent setbacks as regrettable, fuelled by populist and nativist politicians who managed to capitalise on the grievances of those who feel they have been left behind and deserted by the globalist elites. Last October, -
Hugh Hefner: A Progressive Force For Good? A New York Times Discussion
"Jesse Jackson hailed him as a strong supporter of the civil rights movement, while Larry King called him 'a GIANT' of free speech. Others noted that while Hefner loved to excoriate feminists in the pages of Playboy, he was a supporter of some of their causes, including abortion rights and the Equal Rights Amendment. ... But how well does the idea of Hef the liberator of women really hold up? The New York Times Culture writers Amanda Hess, Wesley Morris and Taffy Brodesser-Akner joined [Jennifer -
'It's Over. I Pleaded Guilty': In Rare Interview, Roman Polanski Discusses Rape Case
Still a fugitive in the case of the 1977 drugging and rape of a 13-year-old girl (Polanski pled guilty and served 42 days, but fled the U.S. when told the judge was going to disregard his plea deal), the filmmaker said, "As you know, [victim] Samantha Geimer has been asking for over 30 years for this thing to end. But, I'm sorry the judges who dealt with it the last 40 years were corrupted, one covering for the other. So I don't maybe one of them will [eventually] stop doing it." -
Music, Dance, And Drama Can All Help People With Dementia: Study
"More than 200 residents at the [involved] care homes benefited from the study, which integrated creative workshops into its dementia care for a six-month trial period. All participating homes have since introduced the workshops to the list of activities full time. The benefits included a positive impact on mental health, improved self-esteem and self-confidence, as well as improved cognitive ability and memory recall from the musical activities." -
Louvre Bars 'Sexually Explicit' Architectural Sculpture From Tuileries Gardens
"The work by the Dutch art and design collective Atelier Van Lieshout, entitled Domestikator, was due to go on show later this month as part of the Hors les Murs public art programme organised by representatives of the Fiac contemporary art fair (19-22 October)." The director of the Louvre argues that "this work has a brutal aspect; it risks being misunderstood by visitors to the gardens," and that it would have been near a playground. -
45-Foot Nude Sculpture From Burning Man May Be Coming To DC's National Mall
"The sculpture" - titled R-Evolition - "was created by artist Marco Cochrane as part of [his] The Bliss Project. He said the sculpture was meant to combat a culture that increasingly dehumanizes women and sexualizes the female form. ... The sculpture is being brought to Washington, D.C. by the organizers of Catharsis on the Mall, an annual three-day event that features 24-hour activities, music and an effigy burn. " -

Dealer Sues Matisse's Heirs Over Stolen $4.5M Cut-Outs (What's French For 'Chutzpah'?)
The case concerns two works, White Palm on Red and Green Snail on Blue, that were among hundreds stolen from a cache of works belonging to one of Matisse's sons stored at a Paris warehouse shortly after that son died in 1989. Many of those works were recovered; these two turned up at Sotheby's Paris in 2008 with no line of provenance submitted, and without authentication, the house wouldn't sell them. So the consignor is suing the Matisse family. -

Tom Paley, Pioneer Of American Folk Music Revival, Dead At 89
"Here, after all, was a man who had worked with those American folk legends Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, had influenced Bob Dylan, and taught both Ry Cooder and Jerry Garcia. A passionate enthusiast for folk music and a performer with a wicked and often outrageous sense of humour, he continued to perform - and to record - for as long as he could. His final album, recorded with his son Ben, was released two years ago." -
'Dust To Glitter' Occupation Of Berlin Theater Ends As Police Escort Activists Away
"Protesters associated with [a group called] Dust to Glitter had been occupying the [Volksbühne] since Friday night, declaring the building 'property of the people' in their initial statement. They intended to develop a 'People's Stage' over the next three months, as well as an 'anti-gentrification center' and a 'parliament of the homeless.'" (The protests were not aimed specifically at controversial new artistic director Chris Dercon.) Yet the occupiers left peacefully when the police arri -
The Oldest Institution In All France (1,153 Years!) Reopens As Paris's Newest Museum
La Monnaie de Paris, the mint originally established in 864 by King Charles the Bald and functioning ever since, has been remodeled and opened to the public as a working museum devoted to monetary metallurgy through the ages. (150 artisans continue to work there on specially commissioned coins.) La Monnaie may soon face its first repatriation controversy, however: among its opening exhibits is the Treasure of Hué, looted by French forces from Vietnam's imperial palace in 1886. -
Australian Premiere Of Lin-Manuel Miranda's 'In The Heights' Cancelled After 'Whitewashing' Casting Controversy
"Matt Ward Entertainment, the Australian producing entity behind the production, came under fire last week when a series of character posters were released online revealing that a cast of predominantly white actors had been hired for the production. ... Some protesters questioned the creative team’s decision to move forward with the musical once it became apparent that they were unable to authentically cast the production." -
Septime Webre And Patricia Barker Talk About Their New International Gigs
"This summer, it was announced that two American ballet directors would be taking over major international troupes. Septime Webre is headed to Hong Kong Ballet, while Patricia Barker is taking the reins at Royal New Zealand Ballet. We caught up with Webre and Barker to get the scoop on their new posts and what's coming next." -
Tom Petty, 66
"Mr. Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers, released their self-titled debut in 1976 and soon drew comparisons to the bluesy, guitar-heavy rock of the Rolling Stones and the Byrds. Their music was unabashedly sentimental, seeming to speak to striving, everyday Americans no less than the songs of fellow rocker Bruce Springsteen ... The group toured seemingly nonstop for decades, leading boisterous shows as recently as last week."
