David Shepherd obituary
Artist whose popular wildlife paintings helped raise millions for conservationFresh out of school, with no scholastic achievements to recommend him, David Shepherd applied for a place at the Slade School of Art in London. The Slade did him the biggest favour of his life by telling him that he had no talent for art. Instead, Shepherd, the artist and conservationist, who has died aged 86, took to painting meticulous pictures of railway engines, aircraft and – the real breakthrough – wi -
Movie Musicals Came Into Their Own In The 1950s. But Fred Astaire Was On The Outside Looking In
Astaire’s fate in the early fifties was something one suspects he’d never accounted for: his age was beginning to show. Of course, this was a time when elderly men still courted young women on-screen with stunning regularity, and had Astaire been a normal romantic lead, this might not have been a problem. But he was a dancer. -

What Can We Learn From The Progress Of Civilization?
"The news here is that the lives of most of our progenitors were better than we think. We’re flattering ourselves by believing that their existence was so grim and that our modern, civilized one is, by comparison, so great. Still, we are where we are, and we live the way we live, and it’s possible to wonder whether any of this illuminating knowledge about our hunter-gatherer ancestors can be useful to us." -
Why Bellini's Norma Is The 'Mount Everest' Of Opera Roles
As Renata Scotto once said, "You want to climb the mountain. You know you are supposed to climb the mountain. But it is so difficult." What makes it so difficult? James Jorden gives a thorough breakdown of the part's challenges, musical and dramatic, with audio and video examples. -

Cincinnati Enquirer Lays Off Last Of Its Arts Critics
Classical music writer Janelle Gelfand was the last of the Enquirer's arts writers to go. At its peak, the Enquirer had a theater, art, movie, food, classical, pop, and books critics, each with their own beats. The move comes only weeks before the city's Music Hall was to reopen after a major makeover. Gelfand was leading coverage of the reopening. -
Jeff Bridges Is Fine With Being The Dude Forever
"It's been nearly two decades since The Big Lebowski, a tale about an emphatically nonchalant man named Jeffrey 'the Dude' Lebowski who gets forced over the precipice of chalance, transformed Jeff 'the actor' Bridges into an unwitting pop cult leader. ... Jeff Bridges isn't turned off by this, as some already famous actors might be - by the fanatical, undying popularity of a weird thing he did once, back in 1998, that no one has ever forgotten, that people quote at him ad nauseam. He's too imper -
Why The New York Times Will Recommend A Play With A Dirty Word In The Title But Won't Print That Title
When Ben Brantley reviewed a revival of Suzan-Lori Parks's Fucking A (a take on The Scarlet Letter), he wrote, "since I am not a character in this work but an employee of The New York Times, I shall be referring to this play only as 'A.' (The full title places an Anglo-Saxon adjective before the 'A,' one commonly used on cable television but not considered fit for print here.)" Commenters were not impressed: "Given the rather grisly subject matter, I'm wondering if the people who might attend th -
The Incredible New Theater At Chicago's Navy Pier
"The public won't get in to Chicago Shakespeare's $35 million, 33,000-square-foot one-of-a-kind new space until Sept. 19, when James Thierree's The Toad Knew opens. But you don't have to wait to see the Yard - a theater where the seats can literally float in midair and the stage can morph into just about any shape imaginable. Crain's has obtained exclusive images of the Yard's interior, designed by Chicago's Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture and the UK's Charcoalblue." -
Poor Art | Arte Povera review – the show that proves Britain's on the blink
Estorick Collection, LondonWhat can we learn from these British responses to arte povera, the subversive Italian movement from the 1960s? That it’ll take more than fur sculpture and a daisy cross to outclass the EuropeansThe bilingual title of this exhibition is more than a little unfortunate. The term arte povera, the 1960s Italian movement so christened by the critic Germano Celant, translates as “poor art”. And, as it happens, most of the British imitations of arte povera at -

'Mother!' - Darren Aronofsky Tells How He Made This Strange Film (And Got Hollywood To Let Him Do It)
"Say what you will about Darren Aronofsky, but the guy knows how to get a reaction out of people. ... We caught up with Aronofsky a few months before the film's premiere, while its contents were still top secret, to talk about its allegorical meaning, its startlingly unusual use of Kristen Wiig, and the surprising difficulty of its postproduction process." (Warning: spoilers included.) -

'We Got Ridiculously Lucky': Florida Theatres Clean Up After Hurricane Irma
"While some theatres could not be contacted because phone and power service still were absent Tuesday, managers at some of the most seriously affected theatres considered themselves blessed that they avoided the severity of damage suffered by Houston's Alley Theatre. Forecasters predicted much, much worse, especially in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area, which was hammered but escaped with minimal damage." -
Does Philly Need Yet Another Performing Arts Venue? Actually, It Can Use This One
"The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts has started work on a 277-seat hall that, in addition to being a venue for PAFA's own activities, will host concerts, lectures, and other events by PAFA's partner arts groups ... and will be offered as a rental space to others seeking a small state-of-the-art venue." Peter Dobrin talks to people with several organizations who believe that there's an empty niche for a hall that size. -
'Africa's Tate Modern' – Cape Town’s Zeitz-Mocaa gallery opens
The largest contemporary art museum in Africa opens on Friday as a ‘platform for Africans to tell their own story’A week before its public opening, the social spectacle surrounding the preview of Cape Town’s Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz-Mocaa) threatened to eclipse the art on display. There was a soiree hosted by Gucci. Hanging above the makeshift dancefloor was a giant rubber flying dragon by South African artist Nicholas Hlobo. In one of the museum’s w -
World's First Major Museum For Street Art Opens In Berlin
"There are certainly questions about whether the museum" - called Urban Nation - "marks the institutionalisation of an art movement valued for its anarchic spirit, where works are mainly painted at the dead of night, dodging the prying eyes of police and angry landlords. All the works in the museum's opening show were created specifically for the gallery space, with some sculptures but mainly canvases." -
For All The Chaos In Venezuela, Its Cinema Is Thriving (For Now)
"La Soledad is the latest in a glut of Venezuelan films telling unflinching, complex stories of life in the troubled Andean nation. It might seem surprising, given the increasingly authoritarian regime of Nicolás Maduro, that these films have often benefitted from state funding. ... A major reconfiguration came in 2005 with a reform to the country's national cinematography law. This dictated quotas for the proportion of Venezuelan films in theatres, initiated a tax on cinemas and distribu -
'The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever!' Breaks Attendance Record
The show of work by Grayson Perry with that hyperbolic title was, by average daily visitors, the busiest show that London's Serpentine Galleries have ever held, according to Serpentine management. (Reporter Gareth Harris cites a show from last summer that had higher numbers; a Serpentine spokeswoman gives reasons why that one doesn't count.) -

Indomitable Pioneering Artist John Killacky Announces Retirement From Vermont's Flynn Center
The Flynn’s statement cited Killacky’s emphasis on access and inclusion, as the arts center now works with 75 social-service agencies to provide discounted tickets for their clients. The organization provides $30,000 in scholarships toward participation in the Flynn’s classes and camps. Killacky also led a three-year, $2.3-million renovation campaign for the Flynn that received contributions from 274 sources. -
One Thing Futurists Don't Challenge In Projecting The Future (And Maybe They Should?)
No matter how radical these predictions are, they tend to take the long-term durability of capitalism utterly for granted: Responding to decades of stagnating wages and sliding labor force participation, the Institute for the Future’s report “10 Strategies for a Workable Future” (which is in many ways quite sharp and informative) acknowledges deep problems with our current labor ecosystem and digs into important issues of benefits, collective bargaining, and education. But it d
