BostonSkinner13 August: American Furniture & Decorative ArtsPair of Portraits of Deacon Benjamin Titcomb and his wife Anne Pearson Titcomb (1798) by John BrewsterEst. $30,000-$50,000
A staple of Outsider art circles, the deaf American artist had little formal training as a painter, and learned most of his technique through an apprenticeship with the self-taught painter Joseph Steward, known for his static folk-style portraits. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, Brewster travelled New Englan

Fake heritage for the fake news era
Damien Hirsts monumental show, Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable, looks and feels utterly gorgeous. It is an extraordinary assemblage of more than 2,000 objects, carefully raised from the seabed from the wreck of the Apistos and convincingly displayed in the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi, two of Venices heavyweight museums.
Here is a statue of Laocon writhing in agony, there a coral-encrusted sphinx. There are shields from ancient Greece, swords and scabbards, a cabinet fille -

+/- Human review – Is this the future of artificial intelligence? Bring it on
Roundhouse, London
Random International’s installation, Zoological, features a flock of airborne spheres that glide and swoop and dance and swarm above and among us. What a mind-boggling showIn René Magritte’s surrealist painting La Voix des Airs (1931), three inscrutable spheres hover in an empty blue sky above green fields. I’ve always wondered what these enigmatic objects really are. Do they come from outer space? Are they about to open and unleash a robot army? What -

How Cindy Sherman's Instagram selfies are changing the face of photography
The conceptual portraitist surprised the art world with a selfie-filled Instagram account. But what does it say about how we exhibit photography in 2017?“Cindy prefers not to comment on her Instagram posts.”
This was the reply from Cindy Sherman’s New York gallery, Metro Pictures, when I asked for a statement. A private Instagram account run by Sherman featuring a new series of selfies was recently made public, creating an art world sensation overnight. Sherman has a long histo -

The shortlisted concept designs from ten competing teams are on show at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London (until 22 August) as part of a public consultation. A jury consisting of 13 members including Sadiq Khan, the May -
Tim Reeve, deputy director of the V&A, remembers Martin Roth
I felt I knew Martin long before I arrived for interview at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in spring 2013, when I got wind of the infamous headline shortly after his arrival in the UKWelcome to scruffy Britain: German director of the V&A lambasts the dressed-down style which has outlawed the tie. As a committed tie-wearer, I liked him immediately. But at the interview, as the rest of the panel probed relentlessly, Martin barely said a word, fixing me throughout with a stare t -
The Bronze Age at Frieze—courtesy of Mary Beard
It is an unlikely tale; the staunch classicist Mary Beard dabbling in the contemporary art frenzy of Frieze London. Yet, for this years fair (5-8 October), Beard has collaborated with the contemporary juggernaut, Hauser & Wirth, to create a fictional Bronze Age presentation from a forgotten museum. Titled Bronze Age c.3500BC to AD 2017, the presentation riffs on the trend for immersive fair stands, creating a fictional life or place (remember Helly Na -

Maudie’s Nova Scotia: exploring the landscapes that inspired Maud Lewis
With the Canadian artist’s joyful work celebrated in a new film, Maudie, a road trip around dramatic coast and picturesque villages reveals the area she loved to paintThe film Maudie is every bit as magical, hypnotic and heartwarming as the child-like paintings of rural Nova Scotia by artist Maud Lewis, whose life and work inspired the movie, released last week. Her art, depicting cows, cats, horses and fishing villages, prompted Sally Hawkins, who plays her, to say: “There’s t -
Australia's fake art and tourist tack: Indigenous artists fight back
In the wake of Garma, artists are turning the spotlight onto the widespread sale of fake Indigenous art and artefacts, a practice they say is deeply harmful“We’re not making those. Indigenous people, even Australians, we’re not making those. Who is making this?” says Yolngu artist Banduk Marika. Marika, a board member of the Indigenous Art Code, and former board member of the Australia Council, is part of a team of artists, curators, and arts and legal organisations lobby
