Souls Grown Deep expands the canon of US art
What does it mean to have an American art collection? A panoply of plastic poses: on Emma Hamilton
No life perhaps better exemplifies the potential for an attractive woman in the 18th century, but also the perils sure to stalk her, than that of Emma Hamilton (1765-1815). In her successive incarnations as Amy Lyon, Emma Hart, Lady Hamilton and, finally, mother to Admiral Nelsons daughter Horatia, she embodied social mobility of the most rapid upward sort, but the downward curve that followed was no less steep and spectacular.
The daughter of a Cheshire blacksmith, Amy or Emy soon found herself -

United Airlines Employee Tries To Wrestle Musician's 17th Century Violin Away From Her
“Without provocation, the supervisor for the Chicago-based carrier then lunged for Ms. Correia’s case and, incredibly, tried to wrestle it away from the musician,” said a statement written by MacNaughton. “I start screaming, ‘Help, help, help, can somebody record what’s happening because this lady’s trying to take my personal suitcase from me,’” Correia told Houston NBC-affiliate KPRC. -
Two Big Music Festival Failures Have Some Wondering If The Indie Festival Boom Has Peaked
"According to bankruptcy filings, the Pemberton festival lost money for three years, and sold 18,000 tickets in 2017, down from 38,000 last year. Event planners say it typically takes several years for a festival to become profitable – a threshold many cannot reach given the proliferation of rival events and the repetition of headliner acts." -
Worrying Can Be Good For You (Sometimes)
It can be a motivator to do what needs to be done, and (like banging your head against the wall) you can feel much better after you stop. The key, as usual, is moderation. -
Why Your Next Creative Collaborator Might Be An AI
"The computer learns by having another algorithm—a teacher—progressively introduce constraints—here are different available instruments, these are chords, this what it means to sing in soprano. In essence, the algorithm is replicating Bach’s creativity based, not evolving its own creative genius. As such, AI algorithms are best suited to be creative collaborators." -

How Toronto Quickly Built A $2 Billion Movie Industry
"In 2008, when Pinewood first opened, production in the city descended to an ominous low of $499 million. Contrast that to 2016 when film and television production soared to a remarkable $2.01 billion. It is the third record-setting year in a row, up from $1.5 billion in 2015. Olivia Parker's best photograph: an early warning of Alzheimer's
via theguardian.com
‘It was only after John died that I realised these were an early sign of his illness’They say Alzheimer’s starts way before you notice it. But there are little things. Although my husband John died last year, it wasn’t until quite recently that I noticed this photograph – and realised what it meant. It was taken in 2004, seven years before I actually recognised John was ill. At the time, I would notice things, but he’d explain them away. He had stopped reading -

One hundred years ago this week, as millions of fellow Americans received their call-up papers after the US entered the First World War, the New York-born sculptor Jacob Epstein faced a tribunal in London to be exempt from military service. Already famousand controversialthe tribunal heard that it would be a great national loss if Epstein took up arms and was sent to the Front. If a sculptor lost an eye or hand he would -

We Most Certainly Did Not Damage That Medieval Convent While Filming Don Quixote, Says Terry Gilliam
