Christie’s sale injects confidence into contemporary art auction market
The contemporary art auction market received a much-needed shot in the arm at Christies last night. In large part due to well-pitched estimates, the auction house achieved 82.2m or 96.4m with fees (est 67.6m-101.6m), up 65% on last years total. Of the 56 lots offered, 35.7% went above high estimate and 44.6% sold within estimate. In a cautionary court ruling for art advisers, Lisa Jacobs has been ordered to pay Michael Schulhof, the former president of Sony Corp of America, the $1m she made from the sale of Jean-Michel Basquiat's painting Future Sciences Versus the Man (1983). In a 27 February decision in New York Supreme Court, Judge Charles Ramos ruled that Jacobs had committed fraud and breached a contract that set her fee at $50,000. Jacobs is appealing the decision.
