A bridge to something better: on artist-run galleries in mid-century New York
The chief interest of Inventing Downtown: Artist-Run Galleries in New York City, 1952-65, an important exhibition at the Grey Art Gallery in New York, is anthropological. The 200 or so paintings, sculptures, photographs and documents by around 120 New York artists are largely unremarkable, even though some are handsome. For most exhibitions, this would be fatal, and for most of the works of art in this one it is. But this show is concerned with another kind of quality: the quality of a serious -

The artist Christo has pulled the plug on his Over the River project, which would have covered 42 miles of the Arkansas River in silver fabric for 14 days, as part of a protest that significantly raises the bar for other artists opposed to the presidency of Donald Trump.

Out of Writers Group comes The Pilgrim, a literary magazine that I’ve been editing for the last five years. Large chunks of The Pilgrim are summoned into being, conjured from the chaos-state of pot
