The Secret Behind Multi-Tasking (Here's The Only Way It Works)
"Making multitasking actually work is not a matter of expanding your working memory. It's the reverse. In order to multitask effectively, you need to decrease the amount of working memory that a task requires. And that's where habits come in." -
Claim: Brexit Is A Huge Gift To Hollywood
"For American producers, Christmas came early," says Adrian Wootton, head of the British Film Commission and Film London, who says he has seen a "record number" of inquiries from the U.S. "Suddenly [shooting in the U.K.] became about 20 percent cheaper." -
Jazz Is Hot In Paris. Here Are The Top Ten Clubs
"It remains a flourishing art form that packs out bars, clubs and caverns. With a profusion of styles on offer (from trad, modern and avant garde to bossa nova, jazz-funk and Afro-jazz, not forgetting France’s singular contribution to the genre – gypsy jazz), its freedom-loving soul lives on." -

Is This Going To Be The First Blockbuster Audiobook?
George Saunders's Lincoln in the Bardo has 166 different characters, and for the audio version, he wanted to have each on them voiced by a different performer. Amazingly, Penguin Random House agreed - and you should see the astounding cast they've assembled. (includes video) -
What a vivid imagination: on Sergei Eisenstein's erotic work
Sergei Eisenstein was an auteur of film classics like October (1928) and Battleship Potemkin (1925) and a theoretician of cinema. He also designed sets for stage productions and drew those designs himself.
But his draftsmanship was not so limited. Alexander Gray gallery in New York is now showing his erotic pictures, ranging from scenes of murder taken from Shakespeares Macbeth, to biblical stories, to couplings of humans and plants. There is a bawdy wit in this work that goes beyond any humour -
Russian team creates 3D model to preserve Palmyra as fighting rages on
The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg has joined forces with a Russian archaeological institute to build an interactive virtual model of Palmyra, as reports emerged today (20 January) that Islamic State (Isil) militants have destroyed the ancient city's amphitheatre and four pillard gates. When archaeologists and antiquities experts from the two institutions visited Palmyra, in Syria, in late September, they did not know that drone footage and co-ordinates they collected would capture a s -
Russian team creates 3D model to preserve Palmyra as fighting intensifies
The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg has joined forces with a Russian archaeological institute to build an interactive virtual model of Palmyra, a task that is becoming ever-more important as reports emerged today (20 January) that Islamic State (Isil) militants have destroyed the ancient city's amphitheatre and a tetrapylon. When archaeologists and antiquities experts from the two institutions visited Palmyra, in Syria, in late September, they did not know that drone footage and co-ordi -

Brussels Art Fair embraces the contemporary
A wall of mirror-plated squares suspended by transparent nylon threads moves gently in the breeze, creating dappled patterns on the floor. The 1963 kinetic sculpture, by the octogenarian Argentinian artist Julio le Parc, is not the kind of art that visitors to the Brussels Art Fair (Brafa) are used to seeing when first entering the fair, which is known for its mixture of antique furniture, tribal art and design objects.
But for its 62nd edition, Brafa is embracing the contemporary (until 29 Jan -
Anarchy in the UK: after Brexit, artists bite back
A series of daring, defaced paintings depicting the UKs four most recent prime ministers, created by the New York-based collective The Bruce High Quality Foundation, reflect our turbulent post-truth times. The works, which are on show at the Pippy Houldsworth Gallery in London (5 Years at Heddon Street; until 4 February), show Theresa May and David Cameron with their faces daubed with angry splashes of paint. But what is the reason for this bile-fuelled display? Angry constituents and smar -

Simon Rattle Explains Why His Orchestra Needs A New Hall
Rattle was blunt about the limitations of the Barbican. “It is very clear we can do a lot of wonderful work at the Barbican, but it is also clear there is about 20% of the repertoire that we can’t,” he said. “In my wishlist of pieces there is so much which simply would not work there. The stage was beautifully designed for a certain size orchestra. It was not designed for a very large orchestra and it was certainly not made with a chorus in mind.” -

Kennicott: Trump Eliminating NEA, NEH And PBS Is Significant Step To Eliminating The Free Public Realm
Phil Kennicott: "The loss of the NEA is mostly about symbolism. But along with the loss of the NEH and privatization of the CPB, these proposed budget cuts are part of a nascent but ominous larger movement to eliminate the last vestiges of a public realm free of the dictates of the market. Privatizing the social safety net and shifting tax dollars away from public schools are essential moves in a longer war on a social contract that preserves faith in the public realm. Academia is another target -
The Stories We Tell Ourselves And What They Reveal (Whether We Want To Admit It Or Not)
"We tell stories that make us seem adventurous, or funny, or strong" - or virtuous or stoic or oppressed. "We tell stories that make our lives seem interesting. And we tell these stories not only to others, but also to ourselves. ... If we reflect on the stories we tell about ourselves, both to others and to ourselves, we may well find out things about who we are that complicate the view we would prefer to be identified with. Why might this matter? Here is one reason." -

Binge-Watching TV Has Some Downsides
"Binge TV is entering a new phase in which the makers of your shows, in particular at places like Netflix and Amazon, are betting that the satisfaction of gorging on eight to 10 episodes, batch-released, will be enough to glue you to your phone, laptop or, if you’re feeling fancy, your actual television. The joy is in the completion. Neither attention to quality nor narrative structure matter, necessarily. They drop it. You stream it." -
Why Sydney festival's wooing of the west points to the future of the arts
Performing arts companies tend to cluster in inner-city precincts but taking the road less travelled can lead to transformative theatre experiencesHeigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to the theatre we go – although this time, the path there is a little less worn.Theatre has traditionally concentrated itself in specific districts – think Broadway in New York, the West End in London, the Arts Centre precinct in Melbourne’s Southbank, the Opera House and Walsh Bay areas of Sydney. -
The Straight Guys Who Made America's First Gay Record
"Like a magic mirror held up to America’s heteronormative postwar culture, its music reflected a dignified, and seductive, vision of gay life. Just below the album's title read the teaser: 'For adult listeners only - sultry stylings by a most unusual vocalist.' The surprising story of Love Is a Drag, released way back in 1962. -
Soprano Roberta Peters, 86
Ms. Peters, who would sing with the Met 515 times over 35 vigorous years, was internationally renowned for her high, silvery voice (in private, she could hit a high A, two and a half octaves above middle C); her clarion diction in a flurry of languages; her attractive stage presence; and, by virtue of the fact that she and television came to prominence at about the same time, her wide popular appeal. -

Elise Czajkowski looks at how the change is happening.*Any excuse to watch Rita Moreno is a good one. -

Maison Rouge, category-defying art space in Paris, to close in 2018
Antoine de Galbert is closing Maison Rougehis red-fronted art centre in Bastille, Parisin 2018 after 14 years of activity. Galbert said the absence of long-term durability, the feeling that he could not do better in years to come, and the risk of settling in all contributed to the decision.
When I opened the Maison Rouge, I quickly realised that one day it would be necessary to bring it to a close, and I prefer to do so when its in top form, he said.Galbert, who opened his first contemporary ar -
Richter’s Eisberg to loom large at Sotheby’s contemporary evening sale
In line with the chilly weather, Sothebys has revealed the star lot in its contemporary evening sale in London on 8 March: Gerhard Richters Eisberg (1982), which carries a hefty estimate of 8m-12m. The work is widely regarded as one of the German artists finest landscapes, and may prove particularly appetising to collectors because it is the largest of only three iceberg paintings he ever made. One is owned by Doris Fisher, who, with her late husband Donald, founded The Gap clothing stores; she -

National Gallery finally takes the Fourth Plinth to its heart
The unveiling at the National Gallery, London, of the five proposals for the next two commissions to fill the vacant plinth in Trafalgar Square presents a typically broad and stimulating range of ideas from global contemporary artists. But it also marks a significant shift in the response to the Fourth Plinth phenomenon at the gallery, on whose doorstep the plinth stands.
Maquettes for the commission were shown at the gallery in the past, but the last time they were displayed, in 2013, t -
