Why It’s So Difficult To Define “Consciousness”
For most people “consciousness” will have various meanings and include awareness, self-awareness, thinking in language. But for philosophers and neuroscientists the crucial meaning is that of feeling something, having a feeling you might say, or an experience. An easy way to think about it would be pain. -
Maya Lin, Frank Gehry Take Part in Mannequin Challenge at the White House
via artnews.comSome readers may be thinking right now that the day’s biggest news was President-Elect Donald Trump’s weird live-blogged meeting with the New York Times. But that is not the case! Below, we can provide on-the-ground footage of a mannequin challenge that broke … Read More -
Why Kara Walker's incendiary slavery art is as relevant as ever
The artist’s bold new work, as seen in an exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art, has taken on a terrifying new prescience in the Trump eraA certain set of expectations attend any exhibition of the work of Kara Walker, the 47-year old African American artist whose tough-minded, incendiary work on the gulf between black and white in an enduringly racially polarized America shakes even the heartiest of souls.Related: Kara Walker: ‘There is a moment in life where one becomes black&rsquo -
Book Illustrators Demand Equal Status With Writers
Covers of novels are ‘revealed’ on social media with no mention of the illustrator, signings take place without both the author and the illustrator of a picturebook present, publishers forget to list illustrators on Amazon, and in a recent case the illustrator of Pigín of Howth by Kathleen Watkins, Margaret Anne Suggs was left off the Irish Book Awards brochure. This is not acceptable and needs to be addressed. -
Blockbuster on a manageable scale: on Richard Dorment
Despite its intriguing title, this selection of Richard Dorments articles from almost 30 years as art critic of the Daily Telegraph is not an autobiography nor a primer for the neophyte. Exhibitionist: Writing about Art in a Daily Newspaper is, like all such anthologies, something of an indulgence, but it is also a useful reference work; too heavy to take to the beach, more apt for consultation in the study. The writing is compacted, intense and focused. This is not a book to read from cover to -
The “Tinder Of Square-dancing” Has Sparked A Dance Craze In China
On most mornings, loud EDM, tinged with strokes of traditional Chinese music, blasts from giant speakers in the nation’s parks. Those parks fill with grandmas and a smattering of grandpas who have forsaken tai chi for “sailor dancing.” -

Artist Richard Prince Sued Again For Copyright Infringement
This time it’s professional photographer Eric McNatt suing over Prince’s use of an image he took of former Sonic Youth leader Kim Gordon. “The complaint outlines at length Prince’s brazen attitude towards appropriating works, and his disposition toward previous legal actions against him, including the case brought by photographer Patrick Cariou.” -
How The Right Is Using Left-Leaning Celebrity Angst Against Itself
“While the angry tweets, therapeutic Instagram testimonials and fiery speeches may comfort their fans, these left-leaning celebrities are also inadvertently energizing the opposition. Conservative news outlets — most notably Breitbart News Network, the right-wing populist enclave — are perfecting the art of sapping Democratic stars’ name recognition and repurposing their words and actions into pro-Trump material.” -
So What Exactly *Is* ‘Longform Journalism’? It’s Not Just A Word Count
Brendan Fitzgerald considers, and questions, the taxonomy: “such labels sometimes reward the writer, who becomes associated with a popular movement. They sometimes reward the reader, who has a new word for what she seeks. … Whether labels like ‘longform’ reward a story is another matter.” -
Now That Computers Dominate Chess, Some Of The Art Of The Game Has Been Lost
“Grandmasters that have grown up with most of their training in the computer era play a much more objective style of chess. They’re less willing to dismiss a move because it’s ugly, or doesn’t appeal to their aesthetics.” -

A Brief History Of Time Travel
The first incidence of time travel in fiction (Rip van Winkle and the Connecticut Yankee notwithstanding) was H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine in 1985. Ten years later, Einstein first published his theories – and it turns out Wells’s fantasies matched up pretty well. “Time travel has been an object of fascination ever since.” -
Universal Translator? An Expert Weighs In On The Challenges
“I am a professional translator, having translated some 125 books from the French. One might therefore expect me to bristle at Google’s claim that its new translation engine is almost as good as a human translator, scoring 5.0 on a scale of 0 to 6, whereas humans average 5.1. But I’m also a PhD in mathematics who has developed software that ‘reads’ European newspapers in four languages and categorises the results by topic. So, rather than be defensive about the poss -

How NPR’s “Tiny Desk” Concerts Attracted A Cult Following (And Millions Of Followers)
Over eight years, more than 550 musical acts have played at this “Tiny Desk.” The show has attracted a cult following on the internet, partly thanks to its musical curation — a peculiar mix of indie rock, hip-hop, world music, and jazz — but more so because of its authenticity. -

Yeah, The Theater *Is* A Safe Space, In More Than One Way (But Should It Be?)
Jesse Green considers how theater has been a refuge from generations of high school bullies, the one public setting where he feels safe holding his husband’s hand, and, these days, a place where right-thinking liberals can stay secure in their bubble. However, Green reminds us, Peter Brook did not title his seminal book The Safe Space … -

The Religious Movie Boom You Probably Haven’t Heard About
You’ll remember Mel Gibson‘s The Passion of the Christ, and you probably know about the recent biblical epics Noah and Exodus: Gods and Kings and this year’s Jesus bopics, The Young Messiah, Risen and Last Days in the Desert. There’s a similar trend in Middle Eastern cinema covering the early days of Islam. -
The Founding Novelist Of Israeli Literature (Even Israelis Have Trouble Reading Him)
S. Y. Agnon, the only Israeli writer to win a Nobel, has never broken through to an international audience.
