On Saturday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is hosting a daylong series of lectures, conversations and film screenings that examine the past year in architecture and design. What’s It Like Being A Juror For The Giller Prize? Think Fight Club

Protests Over Gallery Openings In Los Angeles Escalate – The Anti-Gentrification Side Gets Noisy
“The protests come at a time when the city has gained a reputation as a contemporary art capital that some critics say eclipses New York. Over the past decade, the Los Angeles art scene has grown tremendously, with the opening of the popular Broad museum, large flagship spaces created by local galleries, and outposts set up by a string of prominent New York and European dealers, including Hauser Wirth & Schimmel’s 100,000-square-foot complex, all of which have helped transform do -

Will the real Rembrandt please stand up?
Questions of attribution, scholarship and connoisseurship are at the core of a small Rembrandt exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London (Am I Rembrandt? 8 November-5 March 2017). The show centres on a pair of pictures by the artist, one of which is Self-Portrait, Wearing a Feathered Bonnet (1635), borrowed from the National Trust, which was only fully confirmed as a work by the artist in 2014 after technical study and scholarly research. The exhibition aims to show that attribution is -
Love connection: gallery show pairs works by famous artist couples
When it comes to romantic relationships, one never knows what goes on behind closed doorsbut for artistic couples, hints may be found in their work. Such is the premise behind Artists and Lovers, a pop-up exhibition by the dealer Pilar Ordovas that arrived in New York from London this week (until 7 January 2017). I wanted to show couples, both of whom were artists in their own rightnot one to be the muse, the other to be the artist, says Ordovas. Im really interested in the dynamic where you ha -
Baby curators, apply here
We know that collectors are getting ever younger, so its no surprise that the auction house Artcurial is targeting infant connoisseurs with a workshop for children based on its Old Masters sale (14 November). The auctioneer Matthieu Fournier will give collectors and their children a guided tour of the consigned works in Paris on 12 November, with plenty of activities planned. The young amateurs will learn, for instance, that blind-mans buff already existed in the 18th century, thanks to Jean-Ba -

Toronto Art Museum Scanned An Ancient Object That Had Been Defying Understanding For 500 Years. They Found Something Interesting
“The discoveries relate to much more than technique. In an ever-more virtual world awash in technology and information, at a time when machines are increasingly more capable than humans, the show raises profound questions about ancient objects that, it turns out, can be made by human hands alone – treasures we can see and contemplate and touch, but never completely understand, exactly as their makers intended. That might be a big idea.” -
Claim: The National Book Awards Have Been Corrupted And Demeaned
“When two friends of mine were on recent panels, discord was so intense that each judge picked one finalist, the kind of situation that can produce unpredictable horsetrading and compromise winners. Corruption can also enter in. The year I was a judge, one colleague tried to give the award to a family friend. Another judge supported the writer with whom she shared an agent.” -
So You Idealize Victorian England? The Reality Was Rather More… Smelly Than You Might Have Thought
“To the modern sensibility, even the most carefully turned-out Victorian — male or female — reeked. Heavy perfumes covered bodily smells; onion juice was a popular hair tonic; dental hygiene was primitive and certainly not concerned with freshness of breath. Households were poorly ventilated, so various cooking smells clung to fabrics and damp walls.” -

On The Eve Of An Election In A Divided Country, The Story Behind A Fanfare For The Common Man
Copland’s Fanfare is an American anthem. “It was written for the heartland, specifically Cincinnati. But it was also for America. In the end, it was not written for a general or a president, but for the “Common Man,” those“doing all the dirty work” in wartime – in Copland’s words. For those who voted and paid taxes. For those who rationed sugar and gasoline. For a nation united against a common foe. For those who waited for their young men and wome -

Lin Manuel Miranda: How Arts Education Changed (And Defined) My Life
“The impact of arts education on my career is complete, total, and it saved my life. I no longer thought of school in semesters; I thought of it as: we do a play in the fall, we do a musical in the winter, and we had a student run theater group called Brick Prison which we would do in the spring. I was a writer with a deadline because I really wanted to get a play into Brick. That was the focus of my creative efforts for as long as I can remember.” -
Animality review – a cacophonous gathering of art's jungle VIPs
Marian Goodman Gallery, London
A pink octopus, an albino camel, a bronze slug … a menagerie of curious creatures slyly evoke the mysteries of the animal kingdomBird song, or something like it, fills the air. “Art! Art! Aaaartschwager! Beuys. Beuys. Exploring Dylan As A Literary Phenomenon
Accademia has grappled with the literary stylings of Bob Dylan for some time. It may be that Dylan hits a funny sweet spot in academia today: To many professors, he still stands for literary ambition and ’60s rebellion. And for many students — born in the last years of the 20th century — he is so distant from the streets where they live he might as well be John Keats. -
Benefits Of The Arts? A Review Of All The Studies Suggests Something Compelling
“Our review of the literature addressing these questions yielded a surprising result: the most compelling evidence of the value of the arts revolves around improving the lives of older adults. Better understanding the relationship between the arts and aging may help to identify areas for improvement in future research into wellbeing, as well as opportunities for investing in the quality of life of older individuals.” -
This Fall Simon Rattle Is The Defining Conductor In New York
And he has lots to say in addition to his performances: “This is not an easy time for classical music here. I do only get asked this on this side of the pond. In Europe, with all the troubles, it’s alive and well and kicking. Orchestras are doing amazing things here as well, but it’s more of a struggle. One of the reasons orchestras in Europe went so gangbusters in education was that they saw that there wasn’t much music education here, and they said, ‘We’re f -

Giles Waterfield, the director who modernised Dulwich Picture Gallery, has died
The art historian, curator and novelist, Giles Waterfield (1949-2016), transformed the Dulwich Picture Gallery, which he led for 17 years from 1979 until 1996. When he arrived there was a staff of five, two resident custodians (one a carpenter) who hadnt spoken to each other for three years, and the only activities were those organised by the Friends. Otherwise nothing happened, no exhibitions, no conservation programme", Waterfield recalled in a typically dry way. The small, historic gallery i -

If You Understand 21st Century London At All, It’s Probably Because Of Zadie Smith
Her books White Teeth, NW, and the new Swing Time are clear-eyed about the state of the city in this century: “diverse, vivid, at times cacophonous, stuffed full of dreams and aspirations, of fear and friction, where the houses of the wealthy abut the estates of the poor and tension simmers beneath the humour.” -
How A Dancer Can Transform Into A Choreographer

For ‘Saturday Night Live,’ The Blessing And The Curse Of This Election

Newly discovered Brueghel to go on show in first UK exhibition on the dynasty of painters
