In 1882, a young Antoni Gaudnow considered one of Spains greatest architectswas shown a plot of scrubland filled with yellow zinnia flowers in the Grcia district of Barcelona. There, he would build his first major commission: a private home for the stockbroker Manuel Vicens Montaner. That house, completed in 1888, is due to open to the public in late 2017. Casa Vicens is the first Gaud masterpiece, says Mercedes Mora, the executive manager of the 2.5m project. The houses original layout, includi -
Remembering the ‘mud angels’
Fifty years ago, on 4 November 1966, Italy was hit by floods, devastating two of its most historic cities: Florence and Venice. This represented the greatest loss of art and architecture from a natural disaster in 20th-century Europe. The international community quickly mobilised assistance, dispatching angeli del fango (mud angels): volunteers who helped in the emergency rescue of works of art. Everyone wanted to go and scrape mud off a Cimabue, recalls Jonathan Keates, now chairman of Venice i -
Patti Smith’s reading of Oscar Wilde's De Profundis in Reading Prison
Patti Smiths live reading of Oscar Wildes De Profundis in the chapel of Reading Prison was always going to be an extraordinary experience. And what an intense, emotional one it was. Sitting at a simple wooden tableon a low concrete plinth of exactly the same dimensions as the nearby cell where Wilde had spent his two-year incarceration, and presided over by the stark, tombstone-like presence of his original cell doorPatti Smith parted her hair, put on her spectacles and began with a song: a few -

Indigenous Movie Monsters Represent Payback

Why Is Everyone (Including The UK And President Obama) Making Fun Of Art History While Venerating Art And Artists?
“Where this will lead the art world, art history, the art market and — most important of all — art itself, is anyone’s guess. The formal study of the history of art, with its generally impecunious career prospects, may well remain a niche subject. But the digitalization of art means a lot more people across the world are looking at the stuff.” -
When An Injury Ends A Dancing Career, A Photographer Of Dancers Is Born
“The NYC Dance Project was born — ‘out of love’ — and the couple started posting their images to social media. They would treat each dancer like a celebrity, doing an interview in addition to the photo session.” -
Will Yet Another Symphony Strike This Fall? Ask Pacific Symphony Musicians
“The terms proposed by the orchestra’s management are punitive, Neeley argued. To play the minimum number of guaranteed services in their contract, symphony musicians are required to turn down other jobs when they are “on call” for some services, Neeley said. In other words, they might not be used for certain events but must keep those dates open nonetheless.” -
Dance Lessons For Writers
Zadie Smith: “What can an art of words take from the art that needs none? Yet I often think I’ve learned as much from watching dancers as I have from reading. Dance lessons for writers: lessons of position, attitude, rhythm and style, some of them obvious, some indirect.” -

A Conversation With Toni Morrison About Reality TV And Black Lives Matter (And Everything Else)

Actually, don’t publish it *in print.* Media execs “are mining a once-secluded corner of the internet that has become a booming billion-dollar business: a flourishing online literary world that bypasses ink and paper entirely to grab readers by their smartphones, with subjects like tomb raiding, science fiction, fantasy, romance and martial arts.” -

It has also inflamed Canada’s tight-knit literary community and irrevocably altered many lives.” -

“Analysis of the brain scans revealed that differences in improvement of each behaviour were related to pre-existing differences in brain connectivity. In short, the flow of oxygen in the participants’ brains while at rest predicted how much specific aspects of speech or language skills would improve.” -
Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans review – exquisite turbulence
Royal Academy, London
There is far more to Belgian misfit James Ensor than masks and skeletons, as this exemplary show revealsThere is a painting of a skate in this startling exhibition that amounts to nothing less than a portrait. It shows the voluminous fish sprawled flaccidly on a table. The ruffed white body spreads like fancy dress around the head, which is propped up so that the eyes are staring straight at the viewer. The fish wears a tragicomic expression, slightly humiliated, as if caug -
