Will AT&T’s Deal For Time Warner Kick Off A New Round Of Media Consolidation?
“Analysts were split on whether AT&T’s move would spur other companies to combine. Several attributed AT&T’s play as a way to position itself as a more robust competitor to Google and Facebook, which capture the lion’s share of online advertising, and Amazon and Apple, which have strong customer relations.” -

Cities Fight Over Proposed Iconic Gehry Building Plans For Hollywood
“Since renderings were unveiled last year, the discussion has turned away from Gehry’s daring architecture to whether the 334,000-square-foot development is simply too large for the famed boulevard. The main tower, at 15 stories, would be the tallest building to be erected on the Sunset Strip in more than 30 years.” -

Novel Claim: The 1980s Was A Golden Age For TV
“The ’80s bridged the gap between the medium’s tumultuous birth — when it seemed as if it couldn’t decide whether to be vaudeville, legitimate theater, radio with pictures, or free-form video art — and its Peak TV maturation, a period of increased artistic sophistication and overwhelming quantity, literary pretensions, and cinematic effects.” -

Curtis Institute Fires Its Board Of Overseers
“Deeply disappointed” is the way overseers chairman Lowell J. Noteboom characterized his reaction in an email to other overseers. “I believe the discontinuance of the overseers is a significant loss to Curtis and that the administrative burden could have been managed in ways that would not have required such drastic action. That said, there seemed to be no will to craft a different solution,” he wrote. -

A Brief History Of The Ouija Board
Boomers will remember the board as either a popular sort-of-board-game or the means by which the demon possessed Regan in The Exorcist. But its history goes all the way back to 19th-century Spiritualism; it was condemned by a Pope and denounced by a professor as “a serious national menace.” -
Paul Nash review – pain, wonder and inescapable menace
Tate Britain, London
Whether he’s painting the peaceful English countryside or the wartime trenches, the artist usually has something up his sleeve – and it’s not always pleasant Related: Paul Nash: the artist in words and pictures With worlds under huge moons, Oxfordshire hilltops and Berkshire downs, autumn woods and mackerel skies, Paul Nash was almost a neoromantic painter of a small, domesticated island. Buckminster Fuller Believed Technology Is Mankind’s Salvation (Ah, It Was A Gentler Time, Then)
“Fuller put his faith in technology as a means to tame the messiness of humankind. ‘I would never try to reform man – that’s much too difficult,’ Fuller told The New Yorker in 1966. Appealing to people to remedy their behaviour was a folly, because they’d simply never do it. Far wiser, Fuller thought, to build technology that circumvents the flaws in human behaviour – that is, ‘to modify the environment in such a way as to get man moving in preferr -
How Police Pressure Shaped The Ways Hollywood Depicts Law Enforcement In America
“This is not a straightforward story about how police departments are bad and Hollywood is good, or vice versa. Nor is it a simple morality tale about how creative freedom made it possible for a liberal industry to critique a conservative profession. … But driven by the need for drama and excitement, Hollywood used genres such as action movies and reality shows to glamorize the very ideas about policing that have generated such division in the United States today.” -
James Franco's lubed-up riff on Renaissance art is an embarrassment
Sotheby’s commissioned Franco to respond to its exhibition of Della Robbia glazed terracotta, so he duly covered models in slick gel. It’s just the latest unnecessary stab at making old art coolA new video by “artist” James Franco purports to interpret and modernise the Renaissance art of the Della Robbia family, by pouring transparent gel over models’ understandably grimacing faces. It is not just worthless in itself, but exposes the bankruptcy of the 21st-century -

Israel’s Culture Minister Goes To War Against… Culture
Miri Regev has done just about everything she can to alienate and enrage those she considers the elites, or the “cultural junta,” of Israel. Leftists. Secularists. Tel Avivians. Ashkenazim — Jews of European origin. People who, as she told me recently, think that “classical music is better than the Andalusian music” of Morocco, or that “Chekhov is more important than Maimonides.” -

Is Casting Screen Stars In Broadway Plays Good For Theater?
Alexis Soloski: “Well, that depends on your criteria. Certainly, it brings people in who otherwise might not attend and gives Broadway a welcome shot of the glamour it can sometimes lack, making the lights of the Great White Way glow more brightly. But too often celebrity casting seems a cheap ploy to increase box office totals and keep the publicity machine churning. These actors drum up excitement for new plays and goose otherwise bland-seeming revivals.” -
The Super-High Frame Rate In ‘Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk’ Looks Great – And It’s Still Unwatchable
Ang Lee’s latest film “is the first ever to be shot in super-high-resolution 3-D at 120 frames per second. Lee knew its novel look—unrelenting clarity, abundant blooms of fine detail – might come off as more disturbing than impressive. ‘This is not just a new technology, but a new habit in watching movies,’ he warned the crowd. ‘I hope you keep an open mind.’ This was, perhaps, too much to ask.” Daniel Engber explains why. -
Rarely-Seen, Never-Sold Clyfford Still Painting Coming To Market

The Enemy Within At MoMA: Dust
“Over two years, [Nina] Katchadourian interviewed staff members across every department, ultimately realizing that they were united by their stance against this pervasive, invisible-until-it’s-not element.” Then she created a new audio guide: “Wall texts encourage visitors to listen in at a dozen locations throughout the museum, including a tough-to-Swiffer ledge overhanging four stories of the museum’s atrium.” -

Luc Tuymans’s Ensor show at the Royal Academy plays the Trump card
An unexpected object sits in the first room of the exhibition Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans, opening at Londons Royal Academy of Arts on 29 October (until 29 January 2017). The Belgian painter Tuymans, who organised the show, has placed a hat featuring a mushroom-cloud of ostrich plumes on a low plinth. London Gallery Sues Authentication Committee Over Agnes Martin: Decision Rendered Paintings “Worthless”
