Laughing all the way to the White House
When describing this years US presidential election, fun and whimsical are not the first words that spring to mind, but they apply to many of the objects in a timely exhibition at the New-York Historical Society (Campaigning for the Presidency, 1960-72: Selections from the Museum of Democracy, until 27 November). The show includes campaign memorabilia, advertisements, posters, photographs and other archival material from four races to the White House. It opens on a jolly note, with a catchy jin -

What The Goodman Theatre Is Finding Out With Its Audience Engagement Experiments
Engagement isn’t just a simple matter of making more information available. It’s a mindset. “What if a person pays $50 for a show they end up hating? Or what if a person is organizing a night out with friends, or a date, or a family gathering—and everyone has a poor experience? Our goal is to show them that a new play is exciting because it’s untested, not in spite of its lack of production history. Who wouldn’t want to be part of something new? Letting the au -
Chinese Investors Are Buying Into Hollywood. Is There A Looming Threat Of Censorship?
Chinese money has been buying up Hollywood movie companies with the intent of pursuing global business. So is this a problem? “When you control the movie experience, you can subtly influence public opinion. And the Chinese government has been transparent about that goal.” -
Quote me on this, Grayson: you're not a true artist at all
Grayson Perry has quoted my dismissal of him as ‘suburban popular culture’ on a new pot of his. But I’m no snob – and this is typical snark from an artist who makes dry jokes instead of feeling anythingIt’s always nice to be quoted. In a design for a new pot that he has released to publicise his exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery next year, Grayson Perry quotes me dismissing his work as “suburban popular culture”.Did I say that? Probably, although he a -

The Man Who Was The Voice Of Met Opera Broadcasts For 29 Seasons Has Died At Age 96

Doing Queer Theatre In Lebanon – But Keeping Very Quiet About It
“It was both liberating and frustrating for us to create this space where we could finally express ourselves in our city, but that had to be zoned off from the public in order to protect the safety of the actors. Many of them were not out at work or in their families.” -
The Striking Pittsburgh Musicians Say (Of Course) It’s About Quality

Are We Loving Banksy To Commercial Death?

Theatres – Without Getting Partisan – Get Out The Vote
“I’m really interested in not dictating how someone should vote, but there is a way to voice and to extend what you see and how you experience something—you have a form of expression, and sometimes that form of expression is artistic, but what we all have is the power to vote and to have our voices heard. So taking advantage of that journey from heart to head to action.” -
The Not-So-Slavish Devotion Of A Pupil To His Greatest Dance Master

Everyone Is Angry About The Unmasking Of Elena Ferrante, But For Wildly Different Reasons
“In the United States and Britain, the investigation into Ms. Ferrante’s true identity has been viewed by a vocal contingent through the lens of gender. Calling all women artists: the Brooklyn Museum wants to take your picture
You just cannot contain the kind of energy generated by the enormously supportive gathering of 733 women artists in Los Angeles, who came together for a group portrait at Hauser Wirth & Schimmel gallery this August.
