What Does It Take To Sell 10,000 Tickets For Three Days Of Dance In Toronto?
“Of course none of this adjusts for the impact of price or capacity or run length, but 10,000 tickets sure does suggest that dance has a ready-made audience in the city, that dance isn’t just a fringe interest, and that if you advertise well and offer affordable, high-quality material, the demand for dance is there.” -

National Portrait Gallery shows Picasso as a canny caricaturist
When Pablo Picasso unveiled Les Demoiselles dAvignon in his Paris studio in 1907, the painting was greeted by bafflement, anger and even laughter. The influential critic Flix Fnon advised the 25-year-old artist to take up caricature. If the comparison rankled at the time, Picasso later conceded the point, declaring: All good portraits are in some degree caricatures.Caricature is a thread that runs through Picasso Portraits, an exhibition of more than 80 works opening today at Londons National P -

Throughout his distinguished 30-year career, the French artist Philippe Parreno has earned a reputation for collaborations with artists as well as practitioners in a wide range of fields, including film, music, animation, sound and science, that explore and shake up how we can, and should, experience art. Finn Juhl, Chieftain Chair (1949)Galerie le Beau, mid-six-figure sum
There is a photograph of the Danish designer Finn Juhl lounging sideways across this chair, his legs casually slung over the arm. For the dealer Stanislas Gokelaere, it epitomises Juhls playful approach to design, his rupture from classical Danish design and the influence of Modern artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Joan Mir and Henry Moore. It is also inspired by the forms of African tribal weapons; the story goes that after K -

Five years on and the Clyfford Still Museum is still making discoveries
Five years after the Clyfford Still Museum opened its doors, much of its collection has yet to be examined. More than 300 paintings by the pioneering Abstract Expressionist whose works fill the museum remain unstretched. A lot of the paintings still smell like they are dryingwere the first people to unroll them since he made them, says Dean Sobel, the museums director. Sometimes it feels as though we are only about five minutes ahead of our audience.
During Stills lifetime, the audience for his -

Everyone Is Proclaiming That Hollywood Is Dead. No – It’s Just Adapting
“Cinema remains siloed into “studio” and “indie” efforts, with a good chunk of audiences largely ignoring the latter, while television (which essentially has to be made within a studio system) can offer the kind of adult dramas and politically aware works that are seemingly missing from multiplexes. But these aren’t the signs of a lifeless industry. Film is just doing what it’s always done—finding a way to adapt, survive, and serve new audiences.&r -

Frieze art fair 2016 review: Everyone's a performer in the boozy, fruity house of fun
From the crocheted loo seats to the pram-cum-barbecue and roving wet bar, there are stunts and stage-props galore. Then you turn a corner and find an artwork that sticks in your head and stays thereI have seen painted erections and sculptures of first world war female munitions workers, a perished inflatable dildo and several elephants, and a welcoming lavatory attendant. But not all at the same time, though the conjunction would not surprise me. They are all at the 14th Frieze art fair – -

Several ancient Roman and Ottoman coins have been found in the ruins of the 12th- to 15th-century Katsuren Castle in Okinawa, the first such discovery in Japan. The find suggests a link between Okinawa and the Western world, the local board of education said.
While most of Japan remained isolated from foreign influence until the 19th century, Okinawaan island equidistant to China and Japanserved as an important trade route with the rest of Asia. But it is a mystery how the coins ended up at the -

Is There A Difference Between ‘Online Jerry Saltz’, The Wild Man Of Art Criticism, And ‘Real-Life Jerry Saltz’? Jerry Says –

I think that there is very little difference anymore between how I write online and how I write in the pages of magazines or when I speak. … When somebody is hearing, reading, seeing me they have a sense that they’re getting at what I might really be. Even though the pervert that is often out on Instagram might not seem like me, it’s me. And my wife approves of about eighty percent of those pictures.” -
UK Tries To Measure Arts Policy Impact (And The Arts Don’t Do So Well)

This Woman Should Be One Of History’s Most Famous Painters – Why Don’t More People Know About Her (And Her Horrendous Life Story)?
Jonathan Jones: “It is not simply that [Artemisia Gentileschi] became a highly successful artist in an age when guilds and academies closed their doors to women. She also did what none of the other – rare – Renaissance and baroque women who made it as artists could manage: she communicated a powerful personal vision. Her paintings are self-evidently autobiographical. Like Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois or Tracey Emin, she put her life into her art.” -
