YouTube Creators Protest Over Takedowns Of Ads
“YouTube is facing a backlash from creators angry that the video giant is blocking advertising from running against content it deems inappropriate — while the Google-owned video giant says it has not actually changed its policy.” -
What Happens When You Mash Hip Hop And Ballet Together?
“Conceived by Homer Hans Bryant, the artistic director and founder of the Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center, hiplet (pronounce it “hip-lay” to rhyme with ballet) showcases dancers on pointe as they twist and dip to the floor in a loose translation of hip-hop movement.” -
Parker Ito kept his new show a secret—even from his gallery
Artists planning a big gallery show often try to surprise visitors with work that feels fresh or unfamiliar. The Los Angeles artist-provocateur Parker Ito has taken things one step further: he managed to keep his gallerists at Chateau Shatto in the dark, not letting them see the work in progress in his studio for nearly a year and banishing them from the shows installation.
Ito has clearly enjoyed building the suspense. A letter he wrote in lieu of a press release reads: Dear chateau shatto, i -

The seven-metre high installationan illuminated, cubed structure floating on the Thames near the Millennium Bridgeis by the South Korean artist Ik-Joong Kang. A sculpture of a child holding a flashing light stands on top of the cube, which is entitled Floating Dreams.

Broadway Musicals Are More Diverse. But Broadway Plays?
“Somewhat overshadowed by the #TonysSoDiverse hype of the evening were the best performance awards in a play category: all four went to white actors over the age of sixty. After such an exciting season on Broadway, where productions finally reflected the zeitgeist of our times, are Broadway plays lagging dangerously behind?” -
Fear Of Eternity Is A Genuine Phobia
“Woody Allen once said, ‘Eternity is a very long time, especially toward the end!’ Eternity sounds great on the surface, but actually experiencing it may be an entirely different matter. For some people, the very notion of infinity sends chills up the spine. In fact, for many who suffer from ‘apeirophobia’ – a term for the fear of eternity – the thought of an existence that goes on forever amounts to torture.” -
We’re In The Midst Of A Tidal Wave Of Images (And It’s Changing How We Look At Them)
“In the world of social media, Instagram may be an oasis, but as a collective creative project its size is staggering, almost beyond comprehension. In the past year, 30 billion photographs were uploaded. Eighty million go up every day. What does that even mean? The scale of Instagram beggars all attempts to describe it piecemeal. It’s a tidal wave of visual information sweeping away all the old shibboleths of art criticism as it comes to shore.” -
Roald Dahl’s Estate Wants To Become A Children’s Entertainment Empire
Luke Kelly, the author’s grandson: “With publishing shifting a lot, there is still, I think, a huge desire to bring his kind of vivid and mischievous world into other medium. We are really transferring from being a literary estate to being more of a story company, and that is a bit of a scary thing for some people. …[But] it just means that we’re also thinking, How do we get these amazing words and stories into kids’ bedrooms, and into their minds and imaginations, -
That perpetually penniless savant: on Richard Bellamy and Eye of the Sixties
I am supposed to report to a Mr. Bellamy, says a military man with a one-star epaulette and a thousand-yard stare in a 1961 painting by Roy Lichtenstein. The thought-bubble continues: I wonder what hes like.
Those wondering about the late Richard Dick BellamyNew York art dealer, bohemian and veritable midwife for Minimal and Pop artwill find some of their curiosities sated by Judith Steins deeply-researched new biography, Eye of the Sixties: Richard Bellamy and the Transformation of Modern Art. -
Why Do We Need Disability Arts Festivals? (Hint: There Are A Lot Of Disabled People)
Actor Mat Fraser thinks we’ll need them “until disability is reflected in one seventh of all media” – so until we are adequately represented, since disabled people worldwide make up a seventh of the population. He goes on to express the importance of sharing our stories and perspectives. “Disability art is art that talks about the experience of disability in a disabled context, and until people agree that disability is just a social construct, disability arts events -
This ‘Sistine code’ theory is daft. Michelangelo is not a feminist hero | Jonathan Jones
The theory that there’s a human uterus and Fallopian tubes hiding in the Sistine chapel ceiling is a distraction from the real subversive messageIt’s a lovely thought. Up in the heights of the very chapel where the all-male cardinals of the Catholic church meet in conclave to elect popes, there is a 500-year-old feminist code that mocks the misogyny of the Christian religion. A code so well-hidden and so subversive that only now can its shattering satire on Catholic patriarchy be rev -

The Michelangelo Code
The Sistine Chapel is decorated with some of the world's most famous frescoes, instantly recognisable and seen by millions of people every year. But a new article in the Journal of Clinical Anatomy argues that theres more to Michelangelos masterpiece than first meets the eye. Researchers argue that Michelangelo encoded pagan female imagery in his frescoes, perhaps as a sneaky way of revering the feminine at a time when the Catholic Church regarded men as superior to women. At the ceilings exact -

The Great Fire of London—all over again
Its going to get rather fiery down on the River Thames this Sunday (4 September) when the San Franciscan artist David Best is due to set alight his 120-foot long, highly intricate wooden replica of the London skyline in a re-enactment of the Great Fire that broke out in the early hours of 2 September 1666. The blaze began in Pudding Lane and raged for three nights, engulfing the city and destroying more than 13,000 homes. The burning of Bests sculptural replica, located on a barge nea -
What’s The Key To Making An Arts Organization Resilient? The Workplace Culture
“The key point for leaders to realise is that a culture exists in your workplace whether you like it or not. And that’s the point: to develop and co-create a culture, you need to be ‘intentional’ about it. If you don’t think about it, it’s going to emerge anyway and, more often than not, you won’t like what you find.” -
Wild and free: inside the home of Sue Dunkley, pop art's forgotten gem
In her heyday, she was a voracious painter who counted Salman Rushdie and Julie Christie among her fans. As a new retrospective opens, we take a look around the studio of the ‘garrulous hermit’ of the 60s art scene“My house was built in 1834,” Sue Dunkley told the Islington Express in 2003, “It speaks to me and inspires me all the time. You can be anonymous here. Eight exhibitions have come out of this house since I’ve been here. And all the time only four peo -

George Shaw's penis painting is more than just a joke
The 2011 Turner Prize nominee draws inspiration from ancient fertility cults and his Midlands upbringing in his mischievous work The Old MasterShaw’s phallus-themed gag is far from a one-liner. Here, the landscape painter is the wag scrawling penises on the landscape – a tradition that surely goes back aeons. Venice Is Screwed. Can It Be Saved?
“No effective provision on Venice’s behalf has been enforced so far by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, although protection of environment and cultural heritage is among the fundamental principles of the Italian Constitution. Nor are authorities developing any project whatsoever aimed not just at preserving the monuments of Venice, but at ensuring its citizens a future worth living.” -
The Myth Of Millennials As Rebels
“The myth that underemployed, poorly housed young people are joyfully engaged in a project of creative destruction misrepresents our economic reality. But only if we can finally be said to have liberated ourselves from napkins, houses, and sex, will we have given the Boomers something to be proud of.”
