Film Is Gone. So How Do We Save It As Historical Record?
“Most of its history, cinema was medium-specific — it was shot, processed and distributed on film. The movies we watch today, by contrast, are rarely made through mechanical and photochemical processes, but with computer code, with strings of zeros and ones: bits… What happens to an art when its foundational medium disappears? We don’t yet know, because it’s happening right now. If you care about movies, you should be wondering.” -
The World’s Highest Paid Actors

Perm Was To Be A New City Of Culture. Until Russia Put A Stop To It
“We realized that we had this unique chance to make Perm into a place where people would want to live, but there is always this fear in Russia that creative freedom makes people too difficult to control.” -

Mountains of Peruvian poop make a Peckham appearance
Im not sure if all the Peckham cineastes who frequent the panoramic cinema club screenings on the roof of the Bussey Building at 133 Rye Lane, realise that the adjacent building used to house one of Londons earliest cinemas: the 400-seater Electric Theatre, which opened in 1908. Now poised for redevelopment into (hopefully reasonably priced) studios and shared workspaces, its cavernous space is once again playing host to moving pictures, albeit of a more artistic nature.

Female Abstract Expressionists were as active as any male
Although art critics and historians have been writing about Abstract Expressionism for more than 60 years, most of the women involved continue to be marginalised. Many writers have refused to acknowledge that these women artists of the 1940s and 1950s could be innovators, and certain curators and critics have simply ignored them while continuing to focus attention on male members of the group. In recent decades, a younger generation of scholarsmany of them womenhas attempted to integrate these -

If you want to find an audience, you have to go through them.” -

The Book That Changed The Way The World Sees Los Angeles
“Ever since publication, it has shown up on lists of great books about modern cities – even those drawn up by people who consider Los Angeles anything but a great American city. Somehow, this book that drew so much of its initial publicity with shock value (“In Praise (!) of Los Angeles”, sneered the New York Times review’s headline) has kept its relevance through the decades, such that newly arrived Angelenos still read it to orient themselves.” -
‘I’m Sick To Death Of Being Told No One Can Choreograph To Mozart!’, Yells Mark Morris
“Choreographers have tended to avoid Mozart’s music when making dances, for fear their steps will look trivial in comparison. … There is a lingering sense that dance, which involves physical bodies subject to the laws of gravity and propelled by muscle, will somehow drag down the music’s graceful architecture. … Ridiculous! says Mr. Morris.” -

Are US Nonprofits Dependent On Staffers’ Unpaid Overtime Work?
“[There’s]a gap between the values that many nonprofits hold and the way they treat their own staffs. There’s no doubt that nonprofits today face serious financial difficulties and constraints, but do they have no choice but to demand long, unpaid hours of their employees? … The answers have a lot to do with how nonprofits survive in an economy that’s geared primarily toward profit.” -

Why Hollywood Thought Remaking ‘Ben-Hur’ Was Ever A Good Idea (And Why That Was Wrong)

The writer-illustrator made his name with dark, unsettling picture books such as The Rabbits. Now he’s swapped his pencil for clay to make miniature nightmares based on the stories of the Brothers GrimmTwo centuries and a world apart, the Brothers Grimm and Shaun Tan share an ability to confound those who attempt to categorise them. Let’s Have A Frank Word About Book Reviews
“The nightmare reviewer is the reviewer who has some sort of agenda that precludes him or her responding sincerely to the book. Often that agenda is seeming clever and/or taking someone who has received more than her fair share of attention down a notch. But again, there are people who are just on a different wavelength from you, and it’s not that they misunderstand your book — it’s that they really in their heart of hearts don’t like it. That’s actually fair.
