One hundred years after the American painter Georgia OKeeffe (1887-1986) made her professional debut at the 291 gallery in New York, Tate Modern opens the first UK survey of her work since 1993. The show, which is almost entirely drawn from US collections, speaks to a startling fact: none of OKeeffes works are held by any public UK museum.
With around 100 pieces by the artist, the survey opens with abstract charcoals, including those shown at her first 291 exhibition, and moves through the skysc

MoMA breathes life into Bruce Conner’s gas chamber sculpture
Conservators at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York have done the seemingly impossible: they have brought Bruce Conners CHILD (1959-60), a haunting sculpture of a gas chamber execution, back from the dead ahead of a major travelling exhibition.
Conner (1933-2008) made the work, a black-wax figure of a boyits head thrown back and mouth open as if screamingcovered with nylon webbing and strapped to a high-chair, in response to the planned execution of career criminal Caryl Chessman. In 194 -
Garage opens Russia’s most extensive programme for disabled visitors
A new initiative at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow aims to make the institution more hospitable to disabled visitors (Co-thinkers, 7 June-9 September). The programme is uncharted territory for Russia, where disabled people have historically lacked equal access to cultural institutions and disabled children have been shut out of mainstream schools, according to Human Rights Watch.
Despite new laws that went into effect in January banning discrimination against the disabled, we h -

The MySpace Literary Movement That Almost Changed The World
“Brutalism rejected what its founders considered the homogenization of mainstream publishing, calling for ‘raw,’ ‘honest’ fiction and declaring that‘[The] only maxim we adhere to is an old punk belief, which we have bastardized for our own means: Here’s a laptop. Here’s a spell-check. Now write a novel.'” -
Michael Cimino Wrote And Directed ‘The Deer Hunter’ Before Coming Up Short Against The Old West
“Heaven’s Gate, a frontier epic about the settlement of the West that was shot mainly at a studio-constructed town in Glacier National Park in Montana, outraged executives at UA. Cimino’s insistence on authenticity, in the end, deflated the production and sank the troubled studio. In addition, its running time of 219 minutes exasperated theater owners.” -

The U.S. Painters With Secret (More Like Ignored) Lives
“When women did well in contests, they went to pick up their medals and were told they must be mistaken – the winner couldn’t possibly be female. On the rare occasion that women artists were exhibited alongside their male counterparts, critics tended to concede that they were shocked by the quality.” -
Royal sum of £2.7m raised so far for Elizabeth I portrait
The public appeal to save the famed Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I is gathering momentum. The Art Fund charity is driving the campaign to raise 10m so that the historic painting, which is being sold by the descendants of Sir Francis Drake, can be saved for the nation. The #SaveArmada appeal was launched on 23 May with 1.4m in contributions from Art Fund and Royal Museums Greenwich, towards the 10m needed. The appeal total now stands at 2.7m with further approaches to major funders underway, say -
The Secret Lives Of Those Who Live In New York’s Libraries
“While the closed stack is currently sealed off to daylight to protect its rare contents, when the Thornberrys lived in the library, it was a light-filled and vibrant space. But the family was by no means confined to their apartment. They also enjoyed a penthouse-level garden and after hours, access to the library’s stacks and large reference rooms too.” -
Why Does The Movies’ Gender Pay Gap Exist?
Unclear. “Statistics for 2015 released by the Motion Picture Association of America show that movie-going, as a whole, breaks down pretty much exactly 50/50 across the genders. If anything, there’s a slight skew towards women.” -

Writing A Novel Is A Painful Process With Very Little Chance Of Success, So Why Do It?

David Hockney RA: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life review – are you sitting colourfully?
Royal Academy, London
Though David Hockney’s mastery and energy are never in doubt, his show of portraits sees likeness and personality often sacrificed to surface detailDavid Hockney is prolific to the point of loquacity and vigorously experimental. At 79, his work ethic remains stupendous. In the past decade there have been giant watercolours, outsize landscapes, digital portraits and pictures made using lasers, photocopiers, collages and iPads. And now there are portraits once more &nda -
Paper: Paging Through History by Mark Kurlansky – review
This well-bound romp through the back pages of civilisation is flawed but fascinatingMark Kurlansky came to prominence with two books that took commonplace subjects and placed them at the centre of the universe. Cod, as one might have hoped for, was a biography of a fish. Kurlansky argued convincingly that cod had enjoyed a crucial role in trade and conflict, and he followed it up with a biography named Salt, which took a similar line and was no less entertaining. We are, ala -
