US Senate committee submits private museum findings to Internal Revenue Service
A chill went down the spines of collectors when news broke late last year that the US government was scrutinising private museums to discover whether they benefit their wealthy founders more than the general public. In November, the Senate Finance Committee sent a letter to 11 museums set up by collectors asking about their opening hours, attendance figures and the role of the founders in day-to-day operations. Six months later, the results are in.On 17 May, Orrin Hatch, the Republican senator -
The touch behind the image: on New Imagery in Italian Art at the Guggenheim Collection
What becomes of contact in a world of images? With the advent of mass culture in the 1960s, the image became the basic unit of consumption. Television sets, billboards and flimsy magazine spreads extended promises of opulence that remained, by design, out of reach. Imagine: New Imagery in Italian Art 1960-1969, a thoughtful show at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, attempts to reconcile the opposing imperatives of an era at once remote and intimate. Many of the works on display recall -
The stones cry out: on Medieval art in war-torn Syria
Museum With No Frontiers organises exhibitions in the form of visiting trails and the virtual environment, and The Ayyubid Era is the published version of its Medieval Syrian section. The Ayyubids, originally Kurdish, were the dynasty founded by Saladin in 1183. Their rule was effectively ended by the invasion of the Mongols who captured Aleppo and Damascus in 1260 and were in turn defeated by the militarily successful Mamluks. In their short rule, the Ayyubids were among the great building dyn -
Monster sculptures: Serra, Kapoor and Webster in New York
Chelsea is glimmering with subdued success. Among its current compelling shows are Sigmar Polke at David Zwirner gallery and Philip Guston at Hauser & Wirth. Art isn't all noisy fairs, these shows seem to say. Come. See our quiet, wealthy dignity. Then, on 21st Street, there a bunch of giant, monster sculptures that look like they want to kill you.
That's hyperbole, but it almost seems like this was planned. Going east to west, Gagosian, Gladstone and Paula Cooper galleries all present monum -
Kunstkammer museum to open in Adelaide, filled with classic porcelain, clocks, textiles and paintings
A major new museum housing one of Australia’s largest private collections made up of more than 3,000 decorative arts objects opens in Adelaide this week (3 June). Furniture, ceramics, metalware, clocks and paintings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries go on show at the David Roche Foundation House Museum, which encompasses two buildings: Fermoy House, the former home of the late collector, and a new, adjoining A$5m ($3.6m) wing designed by the local practice, Williams Burton Leopardi a -
California landscapes resonate in London
Your show at the Serpentine is called The Weight of the World, but much of your work is about weightless things, such as shadows and light. Where does this heaviness come from? The exhibition takes its name from a series of works that all feature circles. In this case, the expression “weight of the world” is less psychological and more physical—a big circle weighing down in each work. This new series was painted a year ago. I made the first one and Hans Ulrich Obrist [the artist -

'The dictator who failed to dictate': free-range architecture under Mussolini
He made a documentary about architecture in Nazi Germany and followed the Stalinist heritage trail. For his latest BBC4 film, Jonathan Meades is turning his camera towards Il Duce – one fascist monument at a time“After Jerry and Joe” was the cryptic subject line of the email from Jonathan Meades to promote his latest documentary. “The third and final piece on dictators’ architecture,” read the body of the message, followed succinctly by Meades’s address: -

Francis Bacon's painting gloves are going to auction – praise be!
The paint-splattered gloves are proof that we worship artists’ relics – from Turner’s paintbox to Pollock’s brushes – as traces of genius in their own rightIs art a modern religion? It’s like the joke about sex being dirty: it is if you’re doing it properly. At its most powerful, art can offer a cosmic sense of place that for many of us religion no longer provides. The other day, I visited the latest incarnation of the Mark Rothko room at Tate Modern. No -

Lovers of contemporary art and homeware can now kill two birds with one stone at Art Licks Trading, which launches this evening (1 June) at its temporary home of Safehouse 1 in Peckham, south London. Ten emerging artists have made functional items for the home, including a champagne-flute-and-sickle tea towel by Pio Abad; a halo pillo -

Dalí in a diving helmet: how the Spaniard almost suffocated bringing surrealism to Britain
Eighty years ago, as Dylan Thomas served boiled string, Salvador Dalí put on a diving suit, grabbed a billiard cue – and changed British art for ever. Can new exhibition Surreal Encounters recapture that spirit? One spring day in 1936, Salvador Dalí visited a diving shop in the south east of England and asked to be fitted for a deep sea diving suit. When the salesman enquired how deep he intended to venture, the Spaniard replied that his dive was to be into the depths of the h -
