Arco prepares for lift-off in Lisbon
Lisbon seems to be the European capital of the moment, a destination that is attracting increasing numbers of tourists, foreign property investors and trendy young expats. Its small but lively art scene, too, is slowly gaining international recognition.
The organisers of Arco Lisboa, the first outpost of the established Madrid fair outside Spain, believe that the city itself will draw foreign collectors. The fair is working closely with local galleries and institutions to create an integrated p -

Oedipe, Royal Opera House, review: 'A masterpiece'
Enescu's only opera, completed in 1936, finally arrives at Covent Garden in a magnificent co-production with La Monnaie first seen in Brussels in 2011. And what a masterpiece it is. Designed by Spanish-Catalan Alfons Flores and directed by Àlex Ollé, it opens with a tableau of 20 panels of sepia draped figures recalling a cathedral frontage where the Thebans celebrate the birth of a son to King Laïos and Queen Jocaste (memorably incarnated by Sarah Connolly), interrupted by th -

She may now prefer horse-riding to hell-raising, but Tracey Emin is still full of attitude. As she takes a break from the art world, she talks about the ‘horrible’ press, banning high heels – and why a paleolithic partner is a perfect pick-me-upThe last time Tracey Emin opened an exhibition of her work – in Hong Kong in March – she caused international headlines by announcing that she had married a stone in the garden of her house in the south of France. The artist& -
Looted Safavid bowl returned to National Museum of Afghanistan
Christie’s and the British Museum in London have joined forces to return a looted, early 17th-century tinned-copper bowl to the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul.
According to a Christie’s statement, the object, which dates from the Safavid period, was lost during the civil war of the 1990s in Afghanistan. In 1994, it was bought in good faith from an Afghan antique dealer in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, by a German couple, Patrick and Paola von Aulock, who later decided to sell the b -
Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, review: 'Power of love and creativity'
David McVicar's Glyndebourne production of Die Meistersinger premiered in 2011 to a deafening chorus of approval, but that was before people had seen Richard Jones's production for Welsh National Opera. While McVicar set the work in a lovingly-recreated city of Wagner's time, Jones adopted a delicately surreal approach which allowed him to rivetingly illuminate Wagner's elaborate affirmation of the power of love and creativity. -

Explosions in the sky: why Mount Etna erupting is as pretty as a painting
Turi Caggegi’s recent volcanic YouTube footage is uncannily similar to Joseph Wright’s 18th-century art of Vesuvius – both capture an Italian night on fire
Images of Mount Etna spewing molten rock and fire in its latest eruption reveal once again the astonishing and dangerous beauty of volcanoes. These living mountains can be colossally destructive, yet Etna’s frequent eruptions are “Strombolian” events, sending superheated rock and fire-lit ash high in the ai -
