According to our sister paper, the Journal des Arts, Pellerin learned that she was no longer the minister of culture and communication in the middle of a senate debate over her proposed “creation, architecture and heritage” law.

The Buck Stopped Here: Pots, pans, logs and poppadoms at Hauser & Wirth Somerset
Matters culinary are currently pervading Hauser & Wirth Somerset with many of the gallery spaces of this former farm filled with a multitude of well-used cooking pots courtesy of New Delhi based artist Subodh Gupta. In one room discarded metal vessels have been crushed into square panels interwoven with vivid scraps of Indian fabric. In another room the shape of a giant pot is formed by a multitude of suspended aluminum pots and pans, which the artist describes as being “like a galaxy -
The Buck Stopped Here: Monet blossoms at the Royal Academy, romance rules at the Redfern Gallery and more lusty London shows
Pure Romance: Art and the Romantic Sensibility, Redfern Gallery (until 27 February)The jaunty, vivid ceramics of Betty Woodman, which are currently colonising two floors of the ICA, defy easy description. Vessels morph into figures into plinths and sometimes don a kimono for good measure. Some emerge from painted paper bases, and a lot of posing goes on. Brilliantly coloured rooms are conjured from hybrids of glazed earthenware, resin, lacquer, acrylic paint and canvas and can stretch the lengt -

Middle market shines through during week of uncertainty at London auctions
Conservative pricing at Bonhams and Christie’s—aimed at the middle market rather than the top end—produced two solid contemporary sales on 11 February.
Of London’s four major auction houses, Bonhams was the only one to meet expectations, bringing in a record total of £5.3m or £6.4m with buyer’s premium against an estimate of £4.5m to £6.3m. The sell-through rate was 79.2%.
Despite being listed as lot number 49 in the catalogue, -
How, In 2016, Do You Choreograph A 1940 ‘Negro Fantasy’?
Cabin in the Sky is getting revived this summer by New York’s influential Encores! series for the sake of its score by Vernon Duke. Don’t Quite Get What A Play Is ‘About’? Don’t Worry – Theatre Isn’t A Puzzle
Lyn Gardner: “It’s liberating for a theatregoer not to worry too much whether you’ve worked out exactly what it’s about. If you want to solve something, buy a Rubik’s Cube, not a theatre ticket. Not knowing exactly what it’s about doesn’t mean your response is invalid.” -
Why would the De Soles settle their claim against Knoedler and Freedman?
To courtroom observers, the evidence in the Knoedler fakes trial seemed to favour the plaintiffs, Domenico and Eleanore De Sole, who sued the gallery and its former director Ann Freedman for selling them a fake painting purportedly by Mark Rothko for $8.5m. So why did the collectors settle their claim, especially when there were only two days of testimony left? At this point we don’t know, but there were good reasons not to wait for a jury verdict.“Whenever parties agree to settle, -
Do Critics (Should They) Have Power? (Or Is It Illusion?)
“Criticism is not a matter of technique or form,” AO Scott writes, “so much as it is a matter of personality, of who you imagine is doing the talking.” But equally important is on whose behalf the talking is being done. Blog or trade? Alt-weekly or the paper of record? It matters a great deal. -
Van Gogh's bedroom or Tracey's bed: where would you rather sleep?
Following Airbnb’s recreation of Van Gogh’s room in Arles, the history of art has a wealth of possibilities for similar ventures – but whose crib would you book? Related: Bed down with Van Gogh, your Airbnb host for the night I am not sure I want to sleep in Vincent van Gogh’s bed. An astonishing homecoming for this madly inventive artist sets the grotesque against a deep but compassionate melancholy that burns into your soulThey nibble giant strawberries and cavort inside transparent spheres, naked as newborns. Towers as pink and moist as bodily organs rise above the nude revellers, as they ride unicorns and camels bareback, swim with mermaids or crawl inside an egg.
