The 2020 Tokyo Summer Games were supposed to start this weekend. Here’s what was lost, and what might be next.
The building wraps were nothing but window dressing, really.Literally as tall as a skyscraper and as big as an office building, they could swathe downtown’s most monolithic edifices with the likenesses of some of the USA’s most recognizable winter athletes. Yet when it came to hosting the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, they were just nice, not necessary. So it wasn’t until carefully scrutinizing the budget five months before the opening ceremonies — barely enough time to get -
Gov. Gary Herbert accused of hosting unmasked guests at outdoor party
Nicholas Rupp and his husband were partway through their ramble through the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City Wednesday evening when they realized they were passing a soiree on the lawn of the Utah governor’s mansion.Music floated in their direction from behind the fence, and Rupp noticed a harp sitting outside the stately residence. Illuminated by overhead string lights, caterers balanced trays of food and cleared away dirty dishes. The roughly 20 guests who were milling around the ma -
D.C.’s NFL club will become Washington Football Team for 2020 season
Washington D.C.‘s NFL team will go by the Washington Football Team for at least the 2020 season, giving the organization time to choose a new, full-time name.Gone is the Indian head logo and the name Native American advocates have called a dictionary-defined racial slur. Here to stay are the burgundy and gold colors that are synonymous with the franchise's storied history.Executive vice president and chief marketing officer Terry Bateman, hired Monday to oversee the name change and rebrand -
Pioneer Day fireworks and events are still taking place around Utah
While there won’t be the traditional Days of ’47 events in Salt Lake City, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some Utah cities and towns won’t let the holiday go by completely unobserved. Some communities will shoot off fireworks, viewable from a long way away from the launch point. And some municipalities will stage events outdoors, where the spread of the virus can be lessened (with masks and other protocols, of course). Here is a rundown of fireworks shows and other events around U -

14-year-old Utah boy arrested after he reportedly shot and killed his neighbor
A 14-year-old Sandy boy has been booked into juvenile detention after he reportedly shot his 18-year-old neighbor to death. The alleged shooter and the victim, who were neighbors in a Sandy mobile home park, got into a “heated argument” about 6 p.m. Wednesday near 200 W. Eastgate Drive, according to Sgt. Clay Swenson of the Sandy Police Department.“We’re still looking into exactly what led up to the argument,” he said, “which escalated to the point where a gun -
Gavin Noyes: Time for Utah’s state holiday to have different name
In Utah, July 24 is a state holiday, officially named “Pioneer Day.” We hold parades, have big firework displays, rodeos and, most years, we barbecue with family and friends.July 24, 1847, however, also marks the day our state was colonized. Pioneer Day is the anniversary of when that Mormon exiles from east of the Mississippi invaded Native American homelands. To some, this public holiday commemorates the occupation of stolen lands, the diversion of waters, the extirpation of wildli -
University of Utah’s theater students of color describe systemic racism and call for change
Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) students have sent a clear message to the University of Utah’s Department of Theatre: “You have lost our trust.”In a letter to President Ruth Watkins, U. trustees and the department, the students said they feel “unsafe, exploited, belittled and unwelcome” in the U.’s classrooms and productions due to pressure to perform in stereotypical roles. They also list a curriculum that includes few plays that tell the storie -
Delta Air Lines permanently bans scores of flyers for refusing to wear masks
Delta Air Lines — which now provides about 70% of departures from Salt Lake City International Airport — is serious about requiring masks on its flights.“We’ve already banned 120 passengers from future travel with Delta for refusing to wear masks on board,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian wrote to company employees in an email on Thursday. He added that the airline just strengthened a policy requiring customers who believe that medical issues prevent them from wearing a mask to -
Mike Tyson, 54, to return for exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr.
Carson, Calif. • Mike Tyson is coming back to boxing at age 54.The former heavyweight champion will meet four-division champion Roy Jones Jr. in an eight-round exhibition match on Sept. 12 at Dignity Health Sports Park.Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history when he won the title in 1986 at age 20 and for a time was the most feared fighter in boxing. But his career became littered with distractions and he hasn't boxed since 2005 after losing his second straight fight. He ha -
Release the Kraken: Seattle unveils name for NHL franchise
Seattle • The name Seattle Kraken seems to have had an air of inevitability around it even during the earliest days of the NHL expansion franchise. "The first time in our office, there's only 10 of us in our office, and we put up our NHL Seattle sign on the front door. And the very next morning there was a Post-it on the door that said, 'Release the Kraken,'" Heidi Dettmer, the franchise's vice president of marketing, told The Associated Press. "So it's definitely something that we've heard -

Utah teachers rally for masks, stronger protections in schools
Wendy Moss feels like she would be safer working in an ICU than returning to her elementary school classroom this fall.At least doctors, she said, are given adequate protective equipment, such as masks and suits, and see one patient at a time. She’ll be standing in front of 30 kids in a room where the windows don’t open and with only a foot of space between the desks, and no way of knowing if one of her students is sick from the coronavirus.“We are less than 30 days before scho -
Lisa Ann Thomson: Salt Lake City School Board gets an F in pandemic planning
I admit, it took me a day to get to it.As the parent of three children, dropping everything at four o’clock in the afternoon is challenging. But the Salt Lake School District Board meeting was archived after its Facebook Live stream, and I took the time to watch it when the kids were in bed. It was a critical meeting to discuss the upcoming school year and our district is the last to announce its plans.I was shocked. Not by the plans, but the utter lack of them.I saw a board completely unp -

Ask Ann Cannon: How can I tell my neighbors to mask up?
Dear Ann Cannon • I see so many of my elderly neighbors not wearing masks. What is the best way to ask that they wear one? Or is it better to just leave a few disposable masks at their doorstep?— Not Quite as ElderlyDear Not Quite • I’ve heard it said (a lot recently) that it used to be the parents who were the ones telling their kids to be careful. The roles have reversed, haven’t they? Now it’s the adult kids telling their elderly parents to be careful, becaus -

We’re 19 weeks removed now from that crazy night that changed the Utah Jazz, the NBA, and, honestly, pretty much the entire country in general. It almost seems a lifetime ago, doesn’t it?And yet here we are, 19 interminable weeks later, on the verge of Utah Jazz basketball again.A lot has happened in the lead-up to Thursday’s “intra-team scrimmage” between the Jazz and the Phoenix Suns, which will take place at 6 p.m. MT as the last of that day’s four scheduled -
Robert Gehrke: A peek inside Utah’s response to the coronavirus (sort of)
As new cases of the coronavirus spiked in recent weeks, Utah’s response to the pandemic has come under fire — from the push to reopen schools to Gov. Gary Herbert’s reluctance to require masks in hotspots.Recently, a ProPublica piece focused on the push by business leaders to ease economic restrictions, despite cautions from medical experts to go slow.So what’s it like to be in the place where these high-stakes decisions are being made? Well, it’s probably nothing l -
Letter: The 30% puts the 70% at risk
So, if most of us are clear on the science of COVID-19 (maybe 70% of us), the basics to “flatten the curve,” reduce hospitalizations and infection spread, are: Everyone wear a mask (no exceptions), social distance, groups less than 10 and hand washing.Gov. Gary Herbert and his political allies have chosen a different path. They have stepped into the camp of the 30%. The 30% puts all of us at risk.It is naive to actually think that merely asking people to do “responsible things& -
Letter: Losing insurance puts families at risk
According to a recent Families USA report, layoffs triggered by COVID-19 have created America’s greatest losses of health insurance coverage in its history — comprehensive health insurance has ended for 25,000 workers and their families in Utah. This number would have been even higher, but thankfully Utah (finally) fully expanded Medicaid just before the pandemic hit. After a successful ballot initiative and a year of legislative interference, Utah opened eligibility for those below 1 -
Letter: ‘Let them find something new’
Ivanka Trump’s suggestion to “Find something new” reminds me very much of the quote attributed to Marie Antoinette saying, “Let them eat cake.”Although Marie actually never said that phrase, Ivanka Trump actually did say "Find something new" to us mere peasants.Paul Jerominski, Salt Lake CitySubmit a letter to the editor -
Letter: ‘Flash mobs’ show no respect to others
I read that “flash mobs” are gathering at stores in anti-mask protests. My problem with this is that I don’t go to stores and spit at other customers, or yell profanities at them, or try to grab an item they are particularly looking at, or bump them with my grocery cart or make insulting or inappropriate remarks to the clerks. Why? Simply because I respect them as fellow humans. However, I do wear a mask when I go to the stores. Why? Because I respect my fellow man and the desire -
Letter: Enough of Stewart’s dishonesty
We require a base level of honesty and integrity from our elected officials. Of course, that is a laughable aspiration when it is Rep. Chris Stewart that represents you. While seemingly harsh, it is undeniably true.Rep. Stewart’s dishonesty, however, recently reached new lows. He previously revealed in a press release on his House webpage that he voted more than “40 times to repeal, defund or dismantle” Obamacare.Consider that. He shared his pride in voting to eliminate mental -
Here’s how Utah lawmakers cut state spending to cope with COVID-19
A month after Utah reduced its education and general fund spending by more than $1 billion, advocates are still taking stock of the sweeping government cuts and wondering if more are in store. The reductions could’ve been much worse, they largely agree. Despite economic turmoil from the coronavirus, state revenues don’t appear to be tanking as badly as some had feared. Lawmakers also decided to draw deeply from reserve funds to help plug budget holes and protect state aid to critical -

Utah Jazz’s scrimmage goals: Keep spreading the message, and ‘go out there and just hoop’
A few days after it was decided that the NBA would resume its season in the bubble campus in Orlando, Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell expressed his preference for staying “on the front lines” to continue to push for change in the realms of social and racial justice: “I think that’s just something that really needs attention, as opposed to people talking about who scored 30 or 40 or who won this game. It should be about Breonna Taylor.”Almost exactly 24 hours before -
Thomas L. Friedman: Trump’s wag-the-dog war
Some presidents, when they get into trouble before an election, try to “wag the dog” by starting a war abroad. Donald Trump seems ready to wag the dog by starting a war at home. Be afraid — he just might get his wish. How did we get here? Well, when historians summarize the Trump team’s approach to dealing with the coronavirus, it will take only a few paragraphs:“They talked as if they were locking down like China. They acted as if they were going for herd immunity l -

Maryann Martindale: Don’t say you support health care workers if you refuse to wear a mask
It sounds like a broken record — wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands, stay home if you’re sick. But despite the repetition and the pleas from medical professionals, many still refuse. It raises the question of why? Why, when people who are trained professionals, working in the very field it is to understand the best way to safeguard our health, do we choose to disregard their recommendations? My daughter was at the grocery store recently. The store has a mandated mask policy -
