Supreme Court rules Trump cannot block release of financial records
Washington • The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for prosecutors in New York to see President Donald Trump’s financial records, a stunning defeat for Trump but a decision that probably means the records will be shielded from public scrutiny under grand jury secrecy rules until after the election, and perhaps indefinitely. In a separate decision, the court ruled that Congress could not, at least for now, see many of the same records. The vote in both cases was 7-2. Chief Justi -

Utah Jazz EVP Dennis Lindsey is bullish on the team’s prospects in Orlando: ‘I think we’ll be formidable.’
Between the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that put the NBA season on hold, the tragic events that sparked the social justice movements taking place around the country, the Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert blow-up, and the season-ending surgery to high-scoring forward Bojan Bogdanovic, one could conclude that the Utah Jazz’s 2019-20 season is a misery best soon forgotten. And yet, with the team now firmly embedded in the league’s Disney World campus bubble in Orlando, and primed for its -

While the entire state of Utah seems to be stuck on hot, it'll be worse for some southern areas.Portions of lower Washington County and the Lake Powell area will see moderate heat risk levels Thursday, but the brunt of the heat will move in over the weekend — with lower elevations across the state facing moderate risk by Friday.Forecast highs in the Salt Lake City area are in the mid- to upper-90s through Monday, parts of southern Utah will move into high or very high risk levels. Gordon Monson: Larry Scott put Utah in the Pac-12, and has since driven the league into a ditch. Is his reign nearing an end?
Larry Scott will be tone deaf until the end, whenever it comes.Maybe sooner than he thought. But he’ll also be rich, so there’s that. The Pac-12 commissioner recently announced a reduced budget for theconference in the coming year, ordered up by the league’s CEOs, itspresidents and chancellors — a nine percent cut in expenses and alsosalary reductions for Pac-12 staffers making at least $100,000 in annualsalary. That, of course, included Scott himself, who is the highest pai -
‘A hot mess’: Americans face testing delays as coronavirus surges
Austin, Texas • With a cough and shortness of breath, it took Austin, Texas, resident Sam Lee three tries to get a COVID-19 test. The first time, he showed up an hour before the public testing site was set to close and was told they had reached capacity. He was turned away from a second center when rain shut it down, and voluntarily left a third after someone ahead of him said they had been waiting in line for more than three hours.“If you have symptoms and you are just driving around -

Ali Sabbah, the owner of three Mazza Mediterranean restaurants in the Salt Lake Valley, says he will close his cafe at 912 E. 900 South for good.“It’s a painful decision,” he said Wednesday, “but in light of the current business atmosphere for restaurants and the reduction in demand, this was the best way to proceed.”Sabbah opened the original Mazza, 1515 S. 1500 East, in March 2000. It quickly became a favorite spot for falafel, shawarma, lamb and other Middle East -
Scott D. Pierce: Tom Hanks’ ‘Greyhound’ is thrilling — even on a TV screen
Midway through the movie “Greyhound,” there’s a spectacular image that all but takes your breath away. As a sea battle between destroyers escorting an Allied convoy and Nazi U-boats plays out, flares eerily illuminate a scene of exploding ships and shellfire. The perspective gradually rises above the cloud cover and looks down on the conflict as the Northern Lights glow in the distance.Sure, it’s CGI. And it looks great on TV. But it would have looked absolutely amazing o -
Ask Ann Cannon: As an only child, I always wanted siblings. But my own kids don’t like each other.
Dear Ann Cannon • So, I grew up as an only child and always longed for brothers and sisters, and I was jealous of the families in our neighborhood that had plenty of kids. Like a lot of only children, I suppose, I always thought my siblings would be my friends as well, which would go a long way to mitigating the loneliness I sometimes felt.Fast forward to the future. My husband and I had four children of our own, all of whom are adults now, and it causes me a lot of pain that some of them j -
‘Saturday’s Voyeur’ is over. Salt Lake Acting Company won’t produce it again.
A 40-year Utah theater tradition has come to an end. Turns out last year was actually the last year for “Saturday’s Voyeur” at the Salt Lake Acting Company. It wasn’t a decision that the SLAC staff and 20-member board made lightly or came to quickly. “We’re keenly aware of what this show has meant to audiences,” said executive artistic director Cynthia Fleming, “because we share the same love of the show.”But the annual musical, which has poke -
Worried about effects on recreation economy, Moab, Grand County urge feds to cancel energy lease sale
The Trump administration’s Interior Department has long professed turning an open ear to locally elected officials when it comes to land-use decisions. That consideration, however, does not appear to always extend to Utah’s Grand County, Moab and other Western communities that elect officials who do not embrace President Donald Trump’s “energy dominance” agenda. The Moab and Grand County councils are urging the Bureau of Land Management to cancel its proposed sale of -

Robert Gehrke: Utah’s school districts don’t need Trump’s threats
Hopefully, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but Delta, Utah, doesn’t have a whole lot in common with Denmark. Germany is vastly different than Genola, Utah, and Norway is nothing like Nephi. But these subtle nuances are lost on President Donald Trump, who let loose another tirade Wednesday, asserting that because those European countries have reopened schools, then U.S. schools should open, too.“In Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and many other countries, SCHOOLS ARE OPEN -
A high school’s American Indian mascot is dividing this mostly white Utah town
A petition to change a high school mascot has led to fierce resistance in a largely white Utah town, where many are defending the Bountiful Braves as a way to honor American Indians and are supported by the mayor, who has told one woman to be “less easily offended.”The confrontation started this week after Mayor Randy Lewis, who was first elected in 2013, responded to an email from a resident and alumna who said she’s troubled that students there continue to wear fake headdress -

Supreme Court’s exception to federal bias laws could impact teachers at BYU, other religious schools
A new Supreme Court ruling excluding certain religious schoolteachers from federal employment protections could leave many workers at church-owned institutions in the Beehive State without the ability to sue over workplace discrimination, legal experts say.The high court decided 7-2 on Wednesday that some instructors in religious schools are covered by a “ministerial exception” to the fair employment laws that typically apply to workers — a finding that legal scholars say is gr -
Letter: We can be selfish or be caring
The numbers are rising, and the things that make Utah a vibrant culture are suffocating. Our arts, music and dining venues and many unique and delightful small businesses are all gasping for air as the freedom to congregate is being severely impacted by the rise in COVID-19 cases/hospitalizations, and deaths. The activities that give our city and state a colorful charm are being squeezed out of existence. Yet, there are many neighbors and citizens who refuse to do the one thing that helps us the -
Letter: Two ways to improve elections
I support the efforts of Rep. Mike Winder and Sen. Curt Bramble to introduce ranked-choice voting in Utah. The candidate with the broadest possible voter support should win. Candidates would have to appeal to more voters instead of just their base.Ranked-choice voting would also eliminate costly run-off elections, which are usually decided by the most committed voters as the rest of the electorate has little interest in voting several times. Now, if the two legislators would follow through on the -
Letter: Trump tries to divide us. Be united instead.
CNN’s Elie Honig wrote an opinion piece, “John Bolton betrayed his country,” by not disclosing multiple acts that could have been cited in the impeachment of President Donald Trump.Bolton’s cowardice, however, has been mirrored by many others in Trump’s administration and the GOP.Reports of Trump’s dangerous and delusional conversations with world leaders, consistently putting his interests ahead of national security, are beyond comprehension. The evidence, sta -
Letter: Supreme Court sides with religious zealots
The Supreme Court has allowed religious limits to Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) contraceptive coverage. Only Trump and his Republican Senate enablers, who are dictated by not only religious zealots but corporate plutocrats, would consider this a triumph for our country.Leaving possibly 126,000 women in this country without birth control coverage, simply by the whim of their current employer. Yet, these are only current numbers. Planned Parenthood has stated that 9 in 10 women will seek contrac -
Letter: Pay workers enough to live
I am happy to see the wave of construction of high-density housing in Salt Lake City. With luck, this will mitigate the dash to the suburbs with its inevitable increase in commuting by car and consequent air quality deterioration.I am also pleased by the determination to make some proportion of new housing capacity “affordable” by those with low and moderate incomes. This will not only decrease long-distance commuting, but will allow workers to have more time to spend with their fami -
MLS returns to action after poignant moment of silence
Kissimmee, Fla. • Nani called it beautiful and emotional. He wasn’t talking about either goal he played a part in during Orlando City’s 2-1 victory over Inter Miami on Wednesday night.Nearly 200 players took the field for an 8-minute, 46-second moment of silence to protest racial injustice before Major League Soccer’s return to action. Players wore black T-shirts, black gloves and black face masks emblazoned with Black Lives Matter. The shirts had varying slogans that inclu -
Ross Douthat: The religious roots of a new progressive era
“Our form of government has no sense unless it is founded in a deeply felt religious faith,” Dwight Eisenhower said in 1952, “and I don’t care what it is.”I’ve always appreciated that line, even though it’s usually quoted somewhat unfairly: If you read the rest of the speech, it’s clear Eisenhower was trying to make an ecumenical point about how multiple faiths might sustain the doctrine of human equality, not an indifferentist point about the irre -
Juab County fire forces evacuations, burns home
A wildfire in Juab County is now under control after forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate. The Mammoth Fire started shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday when crews estimated it was about 5 acres. It’s not clear how much larger it grew, but firefighters say it later burned one home. Those whose residences were not impacted were allowed back in about two hours later.According to Utah Fire Info, the blaze was just south of Eureka. That’s about 15 miles southwest of Utah Lake, and about
