Kurt Kragthorpe: All Jerry Sloan ever wanted was a fair shake, and that made an impression
Editor’s note: Kurt Kragthorpe covered the Utah Jazz and Jerry Sloan as a beat writer with the Deseret News and a columnist for The Salt Lake Tribune. Now retired, Kragthorpe shares some of his favorite recollections of the longtime Jazz coach.A life-changing job promotion would not alter Jerry Sloan’s habits. After becoming the Jazz’s head coach in December 1988, Sloan maintained his pregame routine that included dinner in the press room. Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinne -
Before he coached the Utah Jazz, Jerry Sloan was ‘The Original Bull’
As an NBA player, wherever he would go, Jerry Sloan would leave a piece of him behind. The skin off his elbow in Cincinnati, blood from a cut in Baltimore, the remainder of a fingernail in Philadelphia. Night in and night out, he would barter his body for the chance to put his Chicago Bulls in the win column. His enthusiastic disregard for physical consequences encapsulated the bruising style of the Bulls teams in the 1960s and ’70s. Sloan later brought that tough-nosed brand of play to the -
Cooper Vest of Dixie High named Gatorade Utah Baseball Player of the Year
Cooper Vest played just seven games for Dixie High’s baseball team this season because the COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of spring sports in Utah. But those seven games were enough to land Vest the Gatorade Utah Baseball Player of the Year award. He’s the first baseball player in school history to receive the accolade, which means a great deal to him.“I love my school,” Vest said. “My passion for Dixie High is super, super strong just because of the deep -
Jerry Sloan on the record: His most memorable quotes, and, of course, a few ‘Sloan-isms’
Being the coach of the Utah Jazz for 23 seasons gave Jerry Sloan plenty of opportunities to speak his mind. And while many of his most notable sayings were most frequently made behind closed doors — or were otherwise unprintable — Sloan still made clear what he believed in every time he spoke to the media next to a trash can.We thought we’d compile some of our favorite Sloan quotes from a lifetime in basketball.—On why his players had to work hard at Jazz training camp: & -

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott believes students are safer on campus, football could start on time

Furthermore, if things continue trending positively, training camp could open as early as late-July, with an on-time start to the college football season remaining the goal. The University of Utah is s -
Utah football corner Clark Phillips III opts to look at the bright side of COVID-19 pandemic
Like the rest of his University of Utah teammates, Clark Phillips III went home for spring break in early March, only to stay there as the COVID-19 pandemic hit.Like the rest of his teammates, Phillips III continues to adjust to a new normal, conducting Zoom meetings with his coaches and position groups, working out on his own, trying to stay fit and ready for whenever there is clarity on when the 2020 season will begin.Nothing is ideal right now, especially given Phillips III lives in Southern -

Timothy Egan: Bill Gates is the most interesting man in the world
“It tires me to talk to rich men,” said Teddy Roosevelt, himself a product of wealth. “You expect a man of millions, the head of a great industry, to be a man worth hearing. But as a rule, they don’t know anything outside their own businesses.”Had T.R. spent time with Bill Gates, the polymath who predicted the pandemic in a TED Talk, he likely would have made an exception.Gates is everywhere these days, a lavender-sweatered Mister Rogers for the curious and quaranti -

Before he coached the Utah Jazz, Jerry Sloan was 'The Original Bull’
As an NBA player, wherever he would go, Jerry Sloan would leave a piece of him behind. The skin off his elbow in Cincinnati, blood from a cut in Baltimore, the remainder of a fingernail in Philadelphia. Night in and night out, he would barter his body for the chance to put his Chicago Bulls in the win column. His enthusiastic disregard for physical consequences encapsulated the bruising style of the Bulls teams in the 1960s and ’70s. Sloan later brought that tough-nosed brand of play to the -

Utah’s jobless rate for April was a bleak 9.7% — though not as bad as other states
Utah’s unemployment rate rose to 9.7% in April, state economists said Friday, with as many as 155,800 state residents thrown out of work during the pandemic. In the first solid measure of COVID-19’s economic hit, that jobless rate, while sharply worse from even two months ago, is still well below the national unemployment rate of 14.7% — a clear indication that Utah is faring better than the U.S. as a whole.“Utah’s strong economy preceding this pandemic offered more -
Gordon Monson: Jerry Sloan was a lion and a lamb
Jerry Sloan can coach the angels now.And when he does, up on high celestial courts, they won’t be wearing tuxedos, nor will they be jack-potting around. They will not be playing backward. No. They might wear halos, but they will under no circumstances wear headbands. Their uniform shirts will be properly tucked in, and Sloan will insist they run hard, take smart shots, play defense, step into the competitive challenge. He’ll swear at them in the same colorful manner he perfected down -

Jerry Sloan, the Utah Jazz’s Hall of Fame coach and beloved Beehive State icon, dies at 78
Jerry Sloan was seemingly a man of contradictions. On the one hand, a legendary NBA coach known for his intense, no-nonsense demeanor and a fierce competitive streak, to say nothing of his frequent foul-mouthed rage toward referees; on the other, though, a simple, humble farmer with an affinity for antique stores, yard sales, and vintage tractors, decked out in overalls and a grimy John Deere ballcap, and secretly possessed of a sweet and tender side. And yet, those who knew him best say there wa -

Robert Kirby: ‘Home work’ after the pandemic
Thanks to the lifting of certain restrictions, many businesses are cautiously reopening offices where people once worked in close quarters. As you might expect, there were lots of restrictions. For starters, repopulating the newsroom won’t occur in a rush. Only a cer -

Pandemic halts TV and movie production in Utah. When will it resume?
If these were normal times, there’d be singing and dancing at East High in Salt Lake City as production continued on Season 2 of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.” There’d be horse riding and, no doubt, faux murder and mayhem in Summit County during production of Season 3 of “Yellowstone.”But these are not normal times. Letter: Disband the University of Utah Police Department
The revelation that explicit photos of Lauren McCluskey were saved on the personal phone of a police officer, who later bragged about getting to look at them whenever he wanted, is beyond outrageous. Letter: Cows, not horses, damage public lands
In the May 17 Salt Lake Tribune was an article about the money the Bureau of Land Management needs to cull the growing wild horse population.Another approach would be to increase the price of grazing rights sold to ranchers, which is $1.41 per month per animal. That is a steal. You cannot even feed your dog or cat on $1.41 a month. They should also reduce the number of permits sold.As the article stated, cows do way more damage to the grazing land and, I believe, to the banks of streams flowing
