• Royal Mountain Opens 2025

I’ve noticed a pattern among the family-owned independent resorts here in New York. Often I find a female owner running the business behind the ticket desk, while a male owner is off dealing with operations. Royal mountain was no exception last Sunday on opening day. Brooke Tennis was all smiles as she handed me my ticket, telling me she was surprised by the turn out. The parking lot was filling up fast. I strapped in and pushed down to the » Read More »

Sun Valley Stampede Day 1 Report: Sun, Snow, and Fast Skiing
Riding up the Challenger Lift at 9:01 a.m., POWDER's Ian Greenwood and I shared a look of concern.A thick fog had settled in over Sun Valley's Warm Springs base, and a light, but persistent drizzle was accumulating on our goggle lenses."I'm a bit worried," Ian said as we disembarked at the Challenger mid-station. The meticulously groomed snow crunched and made a jarringly loud noise with each turn. "It definitely froze up overnight," I said unnecessarily. As we joined the crowd of competitors at

10 Low-Altitude Ski Resorts Worth Visiting: From Sea Level to The Mountains
Skiers love big numbers. The largest vertical, the highest peak, the most annual average snowfall—superlatives, hate it or love it, make the ski industry go round. What about the inverse of these records, though? Surprisingly, small and low is interesting, too, which is why we've compiled a list of some of the lowest ski areas in North America.
NOTE: This list includes a mix of low-altitude destination resorts and lesser-known ski areas near sea level. For skiers, there's an obvious benefit

10 Uncrowded Ski Resorts Worth Visiting
Modern skiing, unless you’re talking about the backcountry, is inseparable from the masses. The best advice we can give? Go in the middle of the week. At many resorts, when the snow is good, weekends are a write-off unless you don’t mind spending hours in a lift line.Barring that, venturing a bit off the beaten path to one of these ten resorts could prevent you from feeling like human cattle.

Avalanche mitigation has come a long way.Explosives, which are used to trigger avalanches before they can strike unsuspecting skiers or drivers, have long been a core part of the program. The delivery vehicle for those explosives, however, varies wildly. In Utah’s Little Cottonwood Canyon, military howitzers famously trigger slides from afar. More recently, static towers that can be operated remotely trigger blasts without direct human involvement. Then, of course, there’s the c
