Unmanned helicopter crashes into US Navy ship, damaging hull
SAN DIEGO (AP) — An unmanned helicopter has crashed into the side of a U.S. Navy ship. Officials said Tuesday that no one was injured when the 31-foot-long MQ-8B Fire Scout struck the hull of the USS Charleston. The helicopter crashed about 3:40 p.m. Monday shortly after taking off from the San Diego-based Littoral Combat Ship during routine operations in the western Pacific ocean. The Navy says the ship’s safety net was damaged, as was an area above the waterline. The ship continued -
Advocates detail ‘shadow pandemic’ of violence against women
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Advocates who work in Indigenous communities in New Mexico and on the Navajo Nation say cases of domestic violence increased over the past year. They pointed to the pressures of the coronavirus pandemic, saying lockdowns and stay-at-home orders made it difficult for victims to access help and forced advocacy groups and social workers to be more creative when finding solutions. Their testimony came Tuesday during a virtual summit on ending violence against Indigenou -
UN chief launches Cyprus talks, joined by Greece, Turkey, UK
GENEVA (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has met with leaders of war-divided Cyprus in the Swiss city of Geneva in an effort to revive talks toward a settlement. More detailed talks with Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Ersin Tatar, leader of the breakaway Turkish Cypriot republic in the north of the island, are planned for Wednesday. The foreign ministers of Turkey, Greece and Britain will also attend the three-day meetings in Geneva. The Mediterranean isl -
Houston-area sheriff is named to lead immigration agency
HOUSTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has nominated the sheriff of one of the nation’s most populous counties to lead the agency that deports people in the country illegally. Harris County, Texas, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez is Biden’s pick for director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency that has been without a Senate-confirmed leader since 2017. Gonzalez strongly criticized former President Donald Trump for his hardline immigration policies. After his election in 2016 -
Minnesota Legislature finally funds Chauvin trial security
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Legislature has approved $7.8 million to help cover the extra security costs the state incurred ahead of last week’s guilty verdicts in Derek Chauvin’s murder trial over the killing of George Floyd. The Star Tribune reports that the state House and Senate passed the package Tuesday with bipartisan support. Gov. Tim Walz requested the additional funding to cover the costs for state troopers and other law enforcement who were brought in from o -
Fisch generating buzz in first spring as Arizona coach
Arizona took an unusual step by hiring Jedd Fisch as its football coach. The 44-year-old has a long resume, mostly in the NFL, but did not play football and has limited experience as a head coach, serving as UCLA’s interim coach for two games in 2017. But Fisch may be just the right man for the job if spring football is any indication. Fisch brought Tedy Bruschi back into the fold as an analyst and dozens of former players attended practices and the spring game. He also made a splash by hi -
Judge has doubts on voter privacy in Arizona recount
PHOENIX (AP) — A judge hearing a challenge to voter privacy policies during the Republican-controlled Arizona Senate’s recount of 2.1 million 2020 election ballots says he is not convinced voter secrecy is being upheld. The comment from Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Daniel Martin came at the end of a lengthy hearing Tuesday. Martin also declined to extend a previous judge’s order that auditors hired by the Senate comply with state voter privacy laws — at least unti -
Dispute over powers could spark Idaho government shutdown
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — State officials say Idaho government offices and services could start shutting down in June if the part-time Legislature refuses to adjourn and leave coronavirus pandemic decisions solely to Republican Gov. Brad Little. The scenario would jeopardize the effective date of some 200 bills, including 65 critical appropriations bills, that are set to become law 60 days after the Legislature adjourns. Attorneys with a watchdog group say blanket legislation put forward by lawm -
Juvenile lifer who set precedent sentenced to life again
MOULTON, Ala. (AP) — A judge has handed down a second life sentence to an Alabama man whose case later led to a ban on mandatory life sentences for juveniles. Lawrence Circuit Judge Mark Craig ruled that Evan Miller, despite being a teen when he committed his killing, met the legal criteria to be sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. The Supreme Court in 2012 ruled in Miller’s case that mandatory life without parole for those under the age of 18 at the time of the -
Arizona vaccine sites no longer requiring appointments
PHOENIX (AP) — State health officials say Arizona has sufficient COVID-19 vaccine to meet demand and appointments are no longer required at the state-run vaccination sites in metro Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff and Yuma. The Department of Health Services made the announcement Tuesday, a day after it announced that 60,000 appointments remained available for this week at the seven sites statewide. The department said making an appointment is still recommended because it has the advantage of red -
Tempe police arrest suspect in hit-and-run that injured 2
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Police in Tempe say a suspect has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run last weekend that injured two Arizona State University students. They say 39-year-old Sheldon Whitebird of Mesa is being held on an arrest warrant from an unrelated incident in which he was suspected of driving under the influence. Police also say new charges against Whitebird are pending because his driver’s license may have been revoked at the time of Saturday’s incident for a -
$585K to be paid in sex harassment suit against ‘TikTok doc’
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Health and Science University says it will pay $585,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a social worker who accused a former anesthesiology resident of sexually assaulting her and accused the school of failing to act. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the university issued an apology to the woman in a statement Tuesday. The school said she will be invited to participate in former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s investigation of the university’s ha -
No charges against R&B artist Trey Songz over NFL scuffle
R&B artist Trey Songz will not face charges in an alleged altercation with police officers at the AFC championship game in Kansas City. Jackson County prosecutor’s office spokesman Mike Mansur said Tuesday that there was “insufficient evidence.” He declined to comment further. Songz, whose name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was arrested and jailed overnight in January. Police have said he had scuffled with officers during his arrest for allegedly not following coronavirus pro -
Largest firefighting plane may be sold for COVID-19 response
DENVER (AP) — As Western states prepare for this year’s wildfire season, the world’s largest firefighting plane has been grounded. But the plane could be converted to help fight against another crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic. Alterna Capital Partners LLC has funded the plane’s operations since 2016 and decided to ground the SuperTanker on April 19.
