• Pennsylvania councilman charged with stealing opioids

    WEST READING, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a Pennsylvania councilman wearing a ski mask stole more than $16,000 in prescription opioids from a drug store.
    Berks County District Attorney’s office says Kirk Mullen was arrested Friday and charged with robbery, theft, possession, intent to distribute and more.
    The 34-year-old is a member of the West Reading borough council who has been in office since last year.

    NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey defenseman Mirco Mueller is going to be sidelined with a shoulder injury sustained in a head-first fall into the end boards earlier this week.
    Devils coach John Hynes said Friday Mueller probably would not be out for an extended period.

  • Lawyers for Manafort seek leniency ahead of sentencing

    WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort are asking a judge in Virginia for leniency ahead of a sentencing hearing next week.
    Manafort is to be sentenced next Thursday after being convicted last summer of eight financial crimes.
    Probation officials have calculated a sentencing guideline range of between 19.5 and 24 years in prison for Manafort. Prosecutors with special counsel Robert Mueller’s office have endorsed that calculation.

    TORONTO (AP) — Canada said Friday it will allow the U.S. extradition case against Chinese Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou to proceed.
    Canadian Department of Justice officials issued a statement saying they diligently reviewed the evidence and the case can go ahead.
    Meng is due in court on March 6, at which time a date for her extradition hearing will be set. The decision to proceed is a formality and allows a judge to hear arguments on whether to grant the U.S. request.

    PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A Detroit-area man who was convicted of murder at age 13 has been charged with selling heroin and methamphetamine.
    Nathaniel Abraham now is 33 years old. Bond was set at $100,000 during a court appearance Friday in Farmington Hills. Outside court, attorney James Galen says his client isn’t “holding up so well.”

    YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — Border Patrol officials say agents in southwestern Arizona rescued six immigrants from Honduras who nearly drowned in a canal.
    They say agents assigned to the Yuma Sector Riverine Unit responded to the Salinity Canal about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
    Authorities say there were people calling for help and struggling to stay afloat in the water.
    Agents deployed bags designed for water rescues and got the six people out the canal with medical attention provided at the scene.
