    HURT, Va. (AP) — Authorities in Virginia believe a man fatally shot his wife and their 12-year-old son before killing himself.
    The Pittsylvania Sheriff’s Office found three people dead inside a home Friday night. The Danville Register & Bee reports that investigators on Saturday identified the bodies as 44-year-old Jason Davis, 42-year-old Twana Rhodes Davis and their 12-year-old son.

    PRESTON, Idaho (AP) — A southeast Idaho teacher accused of feeding a live puppy to a snapping turtle in front of students has been acquitted of misdemeanor animal cruelty.
    Media outlets report a Franklin County jury found Robert Crosland not guilty Friday after deliberating for about 30 minutes.
    The charge was filed in June after allegations surfaced that Crosland put the puppy into an aquarium with a turtle at Preston Junior High in March.
    Crosland pleaded not guilty in July.

    NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets have acquired outfielder Keon Broxton from the Milwaukee Brewers for reliever Bobby Wahl and minor leaguers Adam Hill and Felix Valerio.
    The teams announced the trade Saturday. Broxton had four home runs, 11 RBIs and a .179 batting average in 51 games for Milwaukee last season.

  • USGS: Magnitude 6.8 quake shakes remote part of west Brazil

    RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A powerful earthquake has shaken northwestern Brazil near its border with Peru, affecting a remote part of the Amazon rainforest. There were no immediate reports of damages.
    The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.8 quake had an epicenter 55 miles (89 kilometers) west of Tarauaca, Brazil, and 204 miles (329 kms) east of Pucallpa, Peru. It hit at 2:25 p.m. local time and had a depth of 575 kilometers.

    BALTIMORE (AP) — Brandon Horvath scored 13 points, Daniel Akin added 12 with eight rebounds and UMBC came back from a 13-point second-half deficit to beat Maine 61-52 in an American East opener on Saturday.

    BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Thousands of people have braved snow and freezing temperatures in Serbia’s capital to turn up for the fifth week of street protests against populist President Aleksandar Vucic.
    The demonstrators marched through downtown Belgrade blowing whistles and booing and jeering loudly as they passed the Serbian presidency building on Saturday. Some carried Serbian flags and banners reading “We are the people” or “Down with the thieves.”
