    CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) — A Chandler Police Department spokesman says a J.C. Penny Co. store was evacuated Saturday afternoon because of a security concern that turned out to be a false alarm.
    Detective Seth Tyler says nothing suspicious was found but that it was good that an off-duty Maricopa County sheriff’s deputy called 911 to report overhearing a verbal exchange between store employees about a possible shooter.

    FREDRICKSBURG, Virginia (AP) — Authorities say a Virginia man has died in the crash of a single-engine plane.
    A spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police said in an email that the crash occurred early Friday in Spotsylvania County.
    Spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the plane had taken off from Shannon Airport in Fredericksburg when it banked to the left and was caught by the wind. She says that forced the plane to crash into the ground.

    AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Rep. Beto O’Rourke and four other Democratic members of Congress have toured a remote tent city in West Texas where they say 2,700 immigrant teens are being held at a cost of roughly $1 million per day.
    The lawmakers urged the nonprofit running the facility not to renew a federal contract that expires at the end of the year. That would effectively shutter the facility, which was supposed to be temporary but is expanding and taking on a permanent feel.

    STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Stuttgart captain Christian Gentner’s father died suddenly after the side’s 2-1 Bundesliga win at home over Hertha Berlin on Saturday.
    The club says it is mourning Herbert Gentner and its thoughts are “fully with the Gentner family in these difficult hours.”
    Christian Gentner initially gave interviews on the pitch after the game. He then rushed from the changing room to where a doctor attempted to save his father.

  • Report: Federal Air Marshal Service curtailing surveillance

    BOSTON (AP) — The Federal Air Marshal Service says it’s curtailing a domestic surveillance program that’s been accused of spying on thousands of unwitting passengers who are not suspected of a crime or appear on a terror watch list.
    The agency’s new director, David Kohl, tells the Boston Globe that air marshals are “no longer capturing” any “routine passenger behaviors on a plane that would be seen as normal behavior.”
