• Democrat Cox claims victory over California GOP Rep. Valadao

    LOS ANGELES (AP) — Democrat T.J. Cox has claimed victory over Republican U.S. Rep. David Valadao in a California farm belt House district.
    Cox trailed in the vote count until an update Monday put him ahead. Another update Wednesday pushed his lead to 506 votes, prompting him to declare the 21st District race over.
    Valadao did not immediately respond to Cox’s announcement.
    If Cox’s lead holds, Democrats would have a 46-7 advantage in the California congressional delegation.

    TRENTON, N.J. (WCAU) – Two gunmen shot a woman 20 times, killing her in broad daylight on a Trenton, New Jersey, street Tuesday afternoon, police said.
    The shooting broke out around 2 p.m. in the 800 block of Stuyvesant Avenue, according to police. The victim, identified by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office as 19-year-old Shaela Johnson, was hit by gunfire multiple times in the head, torso and other parts of her body.

  • Man convicted in drive-by shooting that killed Phoenix girl

    PHOENIX (AP) — A man has been convicted of first-degree murder in a 2015 drive-by shooting in west Phoenix that killed a teenage girl.
    Maricopa County prosecutors say a Superior Court jury on Wednesday also found 21-year-old Jason Lindsey guilty of drive-by shooting and three counts of aggravated assault.
    A sentencing date wasn’t immediately available.

  • CPB stops $484K cocaine smuggling attempt

    TUCSON – A man from Nogales, Sonora is facing criminal charges, after authorities said he tried to smuggle cocaine through the Port of Nogales.
    U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said the 22-year-old man was coming through the port on Thanksgiving day, when a CBP canine alerted to the man’s Chevy SUV.
    Officers said they removed several packages of drugs hidden behind the vehicle’s radio.
    In all, authorities seized more than 20 pounds of cocaine, worth almost $484,000.
