• Putin says IS seized 700 hostages in Syria; executing some

    MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin says Islamic State militants in Syria have recently seized some 700 people as hostages and are carrying out executions.
    At an international policy forum in Sochi on Thursday, Putin said “they have been recently expanding their area and took about 130 families hostage, which accounts for about 700 people.”

  • Saints place wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr on injured reserve

    METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have placed veteran receiver Ted Ginn Jr., who has been struggling with knee soreness, on injured reserve.
    Ginn has played in four games this season, catching 12 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns, but has regularly appeared on New Orleans’ official injury report since early in Week 2.
    Ginn’s production had largely dipped since Week 2 and he did not have a reception in Week 4 before sitting out a Week 5 triumph over Washington.

  • Authorities say man illegally in U.S. sexually abused girl over several years

    TUCSON – Authorities in Yavapai County have arrested an Ash Fork man who is accused of sexually abusing a young girl over the course of several years.
    Rigoberto Mendez-Hernandez, 34, was arrested by Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office detectives last Monday.
    Detectives say the abuse began when the female victim, a family member, was six-years-old, and the abuse continued for several years.

    WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Access to the ballot box in the November election will be more difficult for some people in the western Kansas town of Dodge City, where Hispanics now make up the bulk of its population of more than 27,000.

    FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrance Williams has been suspended three games for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, a ban he will serve while on injured reserve because of lingering issues from offseason surgery for a broken right foot.
    The league said Thursday the suspension will be in effect Sunday when the Cowboys visit Washington. After Dallas’ open week and a home game against Tennessee, the final game of the ban will be Nov. 11 at Philadelphia.

    LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Walt Disney World says it’s going to build a new nature-themed resort.
    The Florida-based theme park resort said Thursday that the as-yet-unnamed resort will open in 2022. It will have 900 hotel rooms as well as villas for Disney’s timeshare program.

    PENNSBURG, Pa. (AP) — At least 240 animals, including more than 100 snakes, several alligators, five tortoises, two skunks, at least a dozen ferrets and some guinea pigs, have been rescued from a Pennsylvania home.

     According to a new AAA report, teen drivers are even deadlier behind the wheel, when they have a passenger.
    Research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows the risk of dying for teen drivers with passengers jumps 45%. The crash risk goes up to 56% for occupants of other vehicle and 17% for pedestrians and cyclist.
    Teen drivers were involved in more than 1,000,000 police-reported crashes in 2016, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths.

    FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — A man was sentenced to two life sentences in jail for killing a married couple at their Arizona home.
    The Arizona Daily Sun reports Derrick Barnett was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced Wednesday in Division 2 of the Coconino County Superior Court.
    A jury found Barnett guilty of fatally shooting Michael and Nora Demuria on May 1, 2017, at their Williams home.
