    A firefighter sustained minor injuries after he fell through a hole in the floor at a vacant house fire in South Toledo Monday, according to the Toledo Fire Department.     Richard J. "Dick" Koperski of Maumee, a retired Toledo assistant police chief who was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, died Thursday at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on South Detroit Avenue. He was 75. "As a police command officer, he was firm but just," said his brother, Ken Koperski, a retired Toledo police captain.

    Ohio State University's algae researchers have launched yet another initiative to help the state track and study the dangerous algae threatening bodies of water around Ohio. The university's scientists have long led efforts to study the algae that blankets portions of Lake Erie every summer.

  • Boil advisories issued for parts of Toledo

    Franklin Park Mall is under a boil-water advisory until Tuesday afternoon because of a repair late last week to the city water system in the area. According to a city statement, the mall did not lose service during the repair, but city water now must be boiled as a precaution before it can be used for consumption, food preparation, washing dishes, or other health-sensitive purposes.
  • Toledo firm buys 2 buildings near Southwyck mall site

    A Toledo company has purchased two buildings near the former Southwyck Shopping Center from the city of Toledo and will redevelop the property to expand its business operations. The city finalized the sale Friday for the property at 5355 and 5405 Southwyck Blvd. to Olympic Real Estate Group LLC. Owner Paul Rahe said he plans to redevelop the 20,000-square-foot building at 5355 Southwyck into commercial office space for Olympic's sister company, Rahe & Co.
  • Man robbed, shot in leg in East Toledo

    An East Toledo man was shot in the leg during what police described as a robbery outside his apartment Monday evening. The man, who was not immediately identified but believed to be in his mid-30s, was taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center for treatment of a wound not considered life-threatening, officers at the scene said.
