It's that time again. [*gong noise*]Beginning Thursday at precisely 9:45 a.m., Seattle will be sonically harassed and/or visually inspired by the brutal dance of six F/A-18 Hornets, twin-engine supersonic, all-weather carrier-capable multirole combat jets originally designed not to perform aerial bal

I, Anonymous: Ride the Ducks? How About FUCK the Ducks.
    steven weissman
Fuck the Ducks. Fuck your laughing. Fuck your leering. Fuck your happiness. I live on a boat near the public access ramp the Ride the Ducks vehicles use to enter Lake Union. I can stand on my front porch and see five at a time. The guides take their craft mere feet from my front porch. Are those tourists thinking about what an idyllic life has appeared before them? Well, in the great irony of tourism, their presence destroys the very thing they are trying to appreciate. Two year

The Place to Buy Horses in Enumclaw
Getting my Enumclaw on at a horse auction joint. Kelly O
If you do not know what happened in Enumclaw 10 years ago, I recommend you read my little feature on the subject. Though the business between the horse and the man was not at all pretty, the town itself isn't half bad. It has, I think, one of the best dive bars in the state (the Ski Inn Lodge), and the best-looking place to buy a big animal in this county (the roomy and woody Enumclaw Sales Pavilion). Indeed, one could film a whole western

This past spring, Seattle Public Utilities prepared for summer by topping up its reservoirs in the Cedar River Watershed a little higher than usual, but the utility is still issuing a water shortage advisory this summer. Seattle City Council/Flickr
So much for William Shatner's plan to send water from Puget Sound to thirsty Californians! In the face of record-breaking heat and a snowpack drought across the state, Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett are activating the first stages of their water shortag

Sandy Brown drove me around District 5 in his Mini Cooper. Kelly O
When all of this insanity is over and you have a city council elected under the new districted system, things might not feel all that different if you live in a highly visible part of the city like downtown or Capitol Hill. But if you live in a far-flung burg like North Seattle, now city council District 5, the stakes are higher.
Just like in West Seattle, a common refrain in North Seattle is that it's not well represented by the

Oh look, at first glance it seems to be The Stranger but actually it's—UGH, David Toledo, you win for biggest asshole of the primary.
The SECB is fucking done with David Toledo, a no-chance candidate running in North Seattle's city council District 5.Toledo and his amateur animation skills were almost charming for a hot second. Then he came into our endorsement meeting and suggested we count the number of people of color on his Facebook friends list in order to prove—well, we don't e

    Have We Reached Peak App?
This just popped into my inbox...
    Hello
We just launched an app that helps you find oysters at restaurants around you with quick and easy to learn profiles, including the ability to rate the oyster and the aphrodisiac effect. We are giving consumers something new, real time information about seafood, in this case, oysters, by aggregating farmers, restaurants and consumers all into one app! The app works across the country, with major markets like SF, NYC and Boston already up and running.

A Field Guide to Seattle's Vietnamese Delis
TAMMY’S DELI & BAKERY: It’s the mystery that will keep you coming back for more.
I often lament the fact that Seattle lacks a truly great New York delicatessen, a place where you can get pastrami sandwiches and knishes. But every time my friend Ben visits from Brooklyn, I'm reminded how the grass in Seattle really is greener.
My friend is obsessed with the city's Vietnamese delis. On each trip, he works his way through not only various banh mi fillings, but also the many (often u

A few days after a traffic stop, Sandra Bland was dead in a cell. Why was she stopped in the first place? Brian Encinia would tell you it's because she failed to signal a turn from one lane to another, but I believe that's ludicrous—she was stopped because of her color. As Ijeoma Oluo reminded us last week, Driving While Black is not an imaginary problem; it appears in the hard num

    Coming soon from NYU Press...
A straight white girl can kiss a girl, like it, and still call herself straight—her boyfriend may even encourage her. But can straight white guys experience the same easy sexual fluidity, or would kissing a guy just mean that they are really gay? Not Gay thrusts deep into a world where straight guy-on-guy action is not a myth but a reality: there’s fraternity and military hazing rituals, where new recruits are made to grab each other’s penises and

Have You Seen the Cover of New York Magazine?
The magazine's latest cover features 35 women who've accused Bill Cosby of sexual abuse and were willing to be photographed.
Weirdly, as soon as the piece went up, New York magazine's site was victimized by a denial-of-service attack. According to the New York Times, the hacker who boasted of causing the attack "said the attack was based on a hatred for New York City, and was not related to the cover that features Mr. Cosby’s accusers."

Why We're Endorsing Sally Bagshaw for City Council District No. 7
Sally Bagshaw Kelly OSally Bagshaw failed to take us out on either her airplane or her sailboat this year, she's a foe of district elections (worrying Seattle will now get stuck in "ward politics"), she's impossible to pin down on how much developers should be paying in linkage fees to fund affordable housing, and she told us we need to "stay the course" (borrowing a phrase from George W. Bush) on the insane, irresponsible, money-sucking, never-ending morass that is the downtown tunnel project.
