National Weather Service investigators are looking for signs of whether a tornado touched down in southern New Jersey.   A 93-year-old man was struck and killed in Brooklyn after being hit by a tractor trailer and then a car as he lay in the street, said police. Both drivers fled. The driver of the second vehicle stopped, approached the victim but then fled.

  Severe weather that pounded the Midwest and spawned tornadoes shifted on Tuesday to the East Coast, where tornado warnings were issued in several states and rainstorms were strong enough to stop train service. The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for much of southern New England, and strong thunderstorms in Connecticut caused widespread power outages.
