  • City of Flint Held in Contempt for Failing to Meet Lead Pipe Settlement Deadlines

A federal court held the City of Flint in contempt for violating a February 2023 federal court order requiring the city to reach certain milestones in its lead pipe replacement program.
The City of Flint had originally agreed to replace all its old lead pipes by early 2020, but it still has not completed that work. In addition, there remain almost 2,000 homes where residents have been living with damaged properties—some for years—caused by the lead pipe replacement progra

Shanta Nurullah brings the sitar to the Black avant-garde
Last year I went to see grooving Tuareg guitar band Etran de L’Aïr at Constellation, and the opener was someone I hadn’t heard of before: Shanta Nurullah. Her calming set was 180 degrees from Etran de L’Aïr’s ecstatic trance rock, but it shared the same devotional spirit. I was immediately drawn in by her sitar […]

    Riding the waves
The same day I saw Aurora Real de Asua’s Wipeout at Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, I read an essay by onetime Reader staffer Heather Kenny about women finding midlife empowerment in outdoor sports. It was serendipitous—even if Real de Asua’s play has more to do with women’s friendships and interior lives than their desire to conquer […]

William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin’s 2005 musical about a swarm of blooming, buzzing tween-age lexophiles began life as a fully improvised play, C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, created by Rebecca Feldman and performed by the New York–based comedy troupe, The Farm. Finn and Sheinkin transformed it into a fully scripted and scored Broadway musical twenty years ago, but the […]

Artistic director Susan V. Booth waited a good long time after rejoining the Goodman in 2022 to direct a show of her own, but it was totally worth the wait. Her production of Margaret Atwood’s “cabaret” telling of The Odyssey from Penelope’s point of view is just about perfect, beginning with her choice of Jennifer […]

The Carr Report: The IRS can’t touch this income!
As I was thinking of a title for this article, MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” song started playing in my head. So I ran with it.
