Dusty Brown left behind a discography much smaller than his talent
Some musicians use formal training to reach the pinnacle of their craft, but others get there without it—that’s probably why people say that musicians like Dusty Brown were “born” to play the blues. This underrated harmonica player grew up in a sharecropper’s family in the Mississippi Delta, just like many of the blues legends he’d […]

Dr. Emmanuel Ortega on redefining ex-votos
Editor’s note: Coco Picard spoke with Dr. Emmanuel Ortega about the exhibition “Contemporary Ex-Votos: Devotion Beyond Medium,” on view at Gallery 400 and the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum. Edited text from the comic is transcribed here to ease readability. Split between UlC’s Gallery 400 + the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum is “Contemporary Ex-Votos: Devotion Beyond Medium,” an […]

    Reclaiming history
Charles Smith writes historical plays with lively consciences that provide ample opportunities for his characters to debate. But first and foremost, he writes plays about people who are negotiating tricky emotional and moral terrain with limited power to determine the outcome of their lives. And unsurprisingly, his subjects are often drawn from America’s own fraught […]

Jackalope’s The Smuggler is a mix of thriller and morality play
Ronán Noone’s 2019 solo play, The Smuggler, now in a local premiere with Jackalope Theatre Company, seems to carry the DNA of early Conor McPherson plays in its bones. In particular, Noone’s story of a down-on-his-luck Irishman, Tim Finnegan, facing increasingly fraught and compounding moral and financial circumstances, has echoes of McPherson’s 1994 solo The […]

    Short, sapphic, and stirring
Violence, vengeance, and a moment’s glimmer of peace and love in between the mayhem. That is the ageless story amongst humans. This time it comes to Chicago in stereo: the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet plays as part of Chicago Shakespeare’s Short Shakespeare! series, and Joe Calarco’s Shakespeare’s R & J is now running at […]

Don Lemon and CNN have reportedly reached an agreement following his firing last year.
According to TheWrap, the former CNN anchor will receive approximately $24.5 million from his former employer in a separation deal that equals what Lemon would have been paid had he been allowed to stay at the network through the end of his contract three-and-a-half years from the time of his firing.
In April, Lemon announced his firing from CNN on X (formerly known as Twitter). “I a

The Carr Report: Elderly woman was told a whole lie about her Whole Life Insurance policy
I recently read an article from “Moneywise.” This article shares a story about a 72-year-old woman whose life insurance policy is being terminated despite her life insurance premiums being paid every month since 1987. It goes on to say that this is a very common issue. I shared this story with my Facebook followers with the caption, “Don’t let this happen to you or your elderly loved ones!”
The post generated a lot of reactions and responses. I’m going to shar
