Ana Everling proves the language of music is universal
Ana Everling channels a world of music through her singing. Born in Moldova, she studied voice, piano, composition, and music theory at a conservatory, then went on to study jazz performance. But when she moved to Chicago in 2010, she put her music career on the back burner for years as she settled into her […]

Bears: Bolster Defense with Montez Sweat Trade, Fire RB Coach
The Chicago Bears added one of the better pass rushers in the league via trade on Tuesday.
The Bears acquired Washington Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat in exchange for a 2024 2nd-round pick. In Sweat, the Bears get a player they have been sorely lacking: an explosive, rangy pass rusher who knows how to get to the quarterback. Chicago is currently last in the NFL as a team in sacks, having only 10 so far this season.
Since being drafted in the first round by Washington in 2019,

Awakebutstillinbed know emo’s past and command its future
No one can accuse Awakebutstillinbed guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader Shannon Taylor of not knowing emo. Her fidelity to the genre’s traditional use of all-lowercase letters (she styles the band’s name and all its song and album titles that way, even though the Reader doesn’t) and her equally traditional omission of spaces between words ought to […]

Review: All the Light We Cannot See (Miniseries)
This Netflix original miniseries suffers from the same sickly sweet sentimental shortcomings as the novel, if not more so.

18th Street Distillery brings weird, wonderful new spirits to the midwest
A 25-gallon oak barrel sits upright on a pallet among hundreds of others in a former furniture factory in Hammond, Indiana. Drew Fox lays it on its side, yanks out the bung, and inserts a long, copper whiskey thief into its depths. From that he drains a luminous, tobacco-colored liquid into a pair of juice glasses […]

The voice on the phone cracked with emotion. “When I ask people, ‘Did you like it?’ I really want them to be honest. I mean, if there’s something about it that’s a mess, they can let me know as long as they’re not assholes about it. Because yeah, I’m a person. My feelings get hurt […]

Navigating a rocky arts and culture recovery
Years ago, when the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, which is the business end of the CSO, was undergoing one of its periodic contract negotiating face-offs with its unionized musicians, someone close to the musicians told me something surprising: the administration wouldn’t really mind a strike. If the orchestra doesn’t play, they save money. It’s better […]

Upon entering Mooney’s apartment, officers said food that’s normally refrigerated was out on the counter while the 31-year-old was inside the refrigerator

The Carr Report: Are there ‘Big Coins’ to be made in Bitcoins?
There was a time where I would get asked questions about Bitcoins on a daily basis. Clearly, those in the cryptocurrency space have done a great job spreading the word about cryptocurrency. I once heard a report over a podcast stating that more people have heard about cryptocurrency  than have heard about Exchange Traded Funds (EFTs), mutual funds, and index funds. I find that report interesting when you consider the fact that Bitcoin has only been around since 2009. That’s right, as

‘Not in our name’: Chicago’s Jewish left demands a ceasefire in Gaza
“Two Jews, three opinions” is an old saying used by Jewish people to express the beautiful (and often maddening) diversity of perspective found inside their communities. The saying could have been a slogan for the October 23 crowd gathering at 3:30 PM in Federal Plaza when Jews and others came out to blockade the streets […]
